Hello everyone,

I have some odd US coins I found in my change when I was on holiday, I am however missing one from the picture, it is a 1776-1976 bicentennial quarter with a drummer soldier guy on. The exception is the small/tiny US coins and the gold penny. The tiny coins were given to me by an aunt. The gold coin I don't remember where I got it. I am guessing its an ordinary penny? Is it something common in the US? or is it fake? any information on these coins/values is welcome. The Wheat penny is dated 1942. The 'gold' penny is 1999, I also doubt it is gold metal.

Thank you,
Ash

These are all common coins, except for the mini ones those are novelty coins, The penny someone coated with something. I once received a gold plated quarter in change at Wal Mart. You have some silver quarters anything 1964 and before are silver. The Mercury dime is silver too.

That "gold" cent is likely one which was zinc coated then heated to create brass. It could be layered with something else, but my guess is the coin was part of a science experiment.

skyshark124:

I was reading your entry above and wondered if you could tell me if metal detector's worked inside buildings - dirt floor metal buildings.

This doesn't belong here but hope that's excused.

Thanks

Metal detectors should work fine on a dirt floor as long as they are set to discriminate coins from other metals in the ground. Otherwise, you may still hit every flake of foil and steel pipe you move across. The metal building may cause interference if you walk right up by a metal wall with the detector while searching, but other than that, it shouldn't bother your search very much. Just don't hug the walls or get one with a really good discrimination capability and you'll be ok.

Same thing I was thinking. All I find in change is recent, dirty, scratched coins.
