Any thought on how to tell if this is real? I can't find much info on these----weight etc. It weighs exactly 0.556 grams. Any help would be appreciated!

I am aware that there jeweler's copies of these, in good gold.
I do not know what is an acceptable variation for these, but I would make it my business to find out, before making a decision to buy.
Perhaps an ANS member could find out for us. I guess the ANS would have many very good references on these.

To my eye, the design detail on this piece is not very sharp at all.

It appears to be a type 1 California Gold fractional.
These were not plated, but solid native placer gold.
It is damaged, but looks genuine to me.
Not sure of the BG#.

I would say it is probably real. (Which is something I rarely get to say when someone asks about a Cal fractional)

Could be a genuine example of one of the common, round half dollars of this general design which would be BG-428, BG-429 or BG-430 for 1853. Edited to update: the genuine examples of the 3 varieties listed above all have a six point star beneath the wreath. Unless your coin has some remains of such, which I don't see, the coin is likely to be an imitation.
