I should be able to read the legend, but I can't!

Whoever did the damage to the coin wants stringing up. It could have been a nice coin.

Oh yes it is modern. I think someone had a go at cleaning it after they came home from the pub. Great gouges on the revers, probably to see if was something other than bronze, and then between the letters on the obv. It is a real shame. It might only be worth a quid, but that is just vandalism.

Sadly, it was probably the finder that did this damage. In some parts of the old Empire, coins freshly dug up illicitly are often tested to see if they might be silver inside.
