A recent purchase netted this 1865 3CN Piece along with the 1881 from a previous thread, and I wanted to see what the CCF Memebrs have to say about it. Thanking you in advance! (sellers images, I will try and take a few myself shortly)

Sweet coin! That die clash is rockin! I am seeing it as mid - high AU because of slight wear I see on III. Could just be the pic though.

I woukd guess AU55ish? Sweet coin with every thing going on. Add the rotated dies to the list?

The fine bars on the middle '1' of the '111' are starting to fuse. Not sure if it is due to a weak strike or wear. They were still playing around with copper nickel a bit in 1865. That makes it hard for me to grade. There is a mark in Lib's hair, but it could just be a blob of dirt. Very few nicks and scratches in the fields.
I will be optimistic. Slightly weak strike, but not surprised with the die clash. AU58.
Very interesting coin.

Quote: Add the rotated dies to the list? I am more than likely going to use this one for trading/upgrading. I like the Medallic Alignment on this one, but I love my 1881 3CN RPD.

Looking at it on the little iPhone screen and I'd say MS62. The clash is doubled on the reverse, there is a double profile I can make out, very cool. I'm thinking the strike is a touch weak due to all the clashing, the dies are wearing out, and rim Cuds are beginning to form all around the coin. Not really seeing any wear or rub.

I have this one as circulated. The wear on III doesn't really hit me as strike-related.

3CN are really tough due to the composition. Since the leaves on the reverse are showing very slight wear and the fact that the III is set lower this would indicate that what looks like wear on the III is mostly weak strike. There is also some light wear on the cheek and in the hair. The issue with this coin is that it appears to have been dipped or cleaned. I have to say AU details

My initial impression was AU-55 or 58.

oih82w8: If this were my coin, I would NOT trade it. There are too many interesting things going on with it, and it is highly educational.
The numismatist and the coin collector within me are having an argument, and the numismatist is winning. Needs to be fully written up, and enclosed in a cardboard / mylar 2x2.

sel_69l, my demons within are having the same debate; trade it or hold on to it. I got in too late last night from my part-time job to take some different images, hopefully tonight will be better.
