Hi, I just joined this site, had to reply to this post, as I almost fell for this misleading auction.

If you read the negative feedback, the one seller has been doing the same thing with 1967 rabbit nickels, even a more misleading title.

Yesterday I messaged both of these sellers requesting a picture of the actual numbered roll of pennies they claim to have, but haven't heard back, and assume I won't.
They both use the same stock photo that doesn't show a number, and i'd like to see the ripped open roll.

I also asked if they will be listing the hologram wrapper by itself, I would want to buy the wrapper alone....

ebay seller: random_thoughts4eva

Same person selling 1965 blunt 5's and calling them pointed 5's. Same seller that sold a 1955 NSF penny when it was a shoulder fold. Someone just left him negative for selling fake silver. This seller is disgusting. Can't believe ebay tolerates this crap. If you look at his feedback....he leaves retaliatory negatives for everyone that leaves him negative. Absolute garbage!

For those who missed it, this thread had a nice sequence of penny roll striptease photos.

Well at least one of the vendors offers a money back guarantee. I think I would rather pay the return shipping than keep a new penny I paid $50 for - sheesh!

This is the same seller, and this looks like you are buying the whole roll, says ORIGINAL BANKROLL right in the title...

Makes me wonder if the silver RCM coin they have listed is from China.

How is this okay with ebay?

with a feedback score of 97.4% and flawed DSR's AND accusations of selling fake silver and misleading titles on auctions, I assure you this seller is on there way out. ebay won't tolerate this, I guarantee it. it's just a matter of time now

Just looking at the two listings linked in the original post it seems immediately clear to me that the auctions are both for one 2012 penny. The only reason I can think of that someone would bid is to be able to say they have one of the last million minted Canadian pennies. Even then there is absolutely no way of proving it and it has virtually no collectible value.

I am starting to really love coin collecting because unlike so many other avenues in life knowledge and intelligence count for a lot in this hobby!

Each of the mentioned ads are clearly described as a single coin. It is the responsibility of the bidder to read the descriptions carefully and be sure what they are bidding on or purchasing. While there is no way to tell for real if the coins actually came from the stated roll or not (in the case of the Last Million Cents) there is no real indication of a scam here.

Real collectors would take a pass on this but casuals might take a chance on it, I am sure that is what the seller is banking on. If someone is truly stupid enough to pay $50 for one of these loose coins they deserve to be taken. Me, I might pay $50 for a Last Million roll with hologram but certainly not a single, unproven coin.

You guys are out of line.

Stop policing ebay.

The auction could not be more clear and is not deceitful in any way. As another poster above already asked, how would YOU write the description?

SS-P Ottawa You are an honest seller and I can see your point however they are correct in saying most of those things about him as he sold a 1955 NSF cent for 239 dollars fully realizing it was not a NSF. He cursed me for explaining the difference and said to stay away from his auctions. I had the listing on my watch list so I emailed the winner and gave him the heads up. He never did get back to me so I think it was a shill bid.

I can see both sides to the argument- The listing that started this off, while certainly aimed at people who were novices, technically stated exactly what was being auctioned off. However, as soon as you look at the feedback rating of the seller with 97% feedback, there is no way on earth I would touch a coin this guy has listed, especially when you read how he responds to negatives. If you go and take a chance with a seller who has a clear track record of, shall I say, "less than friendly customer service", which is reflected in the responses to the feedback, as SPP said- Buyer beware. The signs are all there.

It is not that I don't want to help new collectors, but there comes a time when the hand-holding ends, and lessons have to be learned, sometimes the hard way. In the case of the coins from the roll, it is like a credit card agreement or any given marketing scam - you have to read the fine print.

In terms of being blatantly deceitful like the 1955 NSF, there are ample resources for collectors to learn and ask first. They could come here, refer to the Charlton Catalogue, Google image search, etc. You have to walk a thin line when criticizing a ebay seller or store here, because you have to remember that not everyone is perfect and we all make mistakes. I can remember more than one listing of mine, where the picture did not match the title or description. I think the best thing you can do is report the auction to ebay as being intentionally misleading. Also, PayPal is there to protect the buyer, if the item is not what was listed or shown in the auction - so even if a lesson is learned the hard way, the most you would be out is postage and pride.
