This set just became available from the BEP.
I wouldn't mind buying a set or two, but the price is a bit steep for me.
Anyone on the forum going to pick this currency set?

I'm sorry, but I am not a fan of these serial number commemorative sets. Putting a $5 and $2 with "special" serial numbers into a cheap package for $40 is ridiculous. Instead of creating a commemorative bill, the BEP held onto serial number groups until they could be marketed off for a high price. These sets will likely be worth $10 next year

Too much to pay for a cardboard holder. Nothing special about these, if you pulled one from circilation you would have no idea that the serial number starting with 1863 had any special meaning.

That's not worth it. They'll be worth face value next year just like the non silver proof sets.

And now it's 39.95. The BEP is probably laughing their butts off, knowing they just scammed us out of our savings with pre-planned printings.

As much as I like Lincoln and Gettysburg, I still can't see paying 39.95 for this set. Wow. This is just a gimmick.

That is a gimmick. Now the 5 oz. silver coin of Gettysburg was nice as well was Vicksburg and as a pair a nice gift to give to someone interested in the Civil War.

I think this set would have more appeal if the BEP had included one note from a Federal Reserve Bank from the North and one from the South. A pairing of New York and Richmond or Philadelphia and Atlanta, for example, would have had more impact vs. New York and Chicago - IMHO.

When I first got into collecting coins and currency I remember checking out the websites of the BEP and the Mint. While the Mint had (and occasionally continues to have) many neat things to purchase, the BEP has IMO always been a bust. Other than the ridiculously marked up uncut sheets there isn't much on there that is worth more than what face value is. Makes their website kind of worthless, but it's nice that they send out the large majority of the currency they print instead of holding certain notes back to sell for large profits. That means that us collectors have a chance to find cool stuff in our everyday change.
As for the Gettysburg note thing, these are never going to be worth more than face. No value to an 1863 number. At least the lucky note series started with a solid 8888 start. You would have to figure that increases your chances of getting something cool significantly. Even that wasn't worth the price, however, and I doubt that they will ever put something out that is worth the price.
