The Sassanian Drachm went for more than I wanted to pay for a holed coin. So I bought this Maurice Tiberius AE Follis for my second ancient coin.

The coin probably looks better in hand than the photos show. Nice pick up.

i just used them to ID a very similar coin a couple weeks ago...plenty of info to go on there on the reverse.

Maybe plenty of info on the reverse if you know what you are doing. As stated this is my second ancient coin.

I went through the list, it is bust facing, large M. Left field is "ANNO." Above looks like a cross to me. I am not sure about the mint mark (I think I see an "N") or the right field. That leaves me with 1606 possible records.

Can anybody give me a hint?

Most likely Nikomedia ..... NIK or NIKO I also think it is ANNO XX or year 20 of Maurice Tiberius...struck 601/2 AD. Officina "B".

if it is year 10 ( a sinlge x), with a NIKO mint mark, a cross above, and a B below, then it narrows down to just two rows on the spread sheat, both "SB 512"..which is sear 512. I can't find an exact fit for year xx, look at it in hand and see how many X's you have there.

kind of compare to this one at vcoins also..

Okay, now that I know what I should be looking at I think there is only one X, making it a year 10.

I'll run everything through the spreadsheet again and see I can get it right this time.

I now realize that part of my problem is that the diagnostic features I started with were not as useful at narrowing down the number of possible coins. Mint mark and Year, once I realized what I should be looking at, are much more useful than the ANNO, Bust facing, cross above features. If I had stepped back and thought about it for a moment that would have been more obvious.

My list of possible coins has been reduced to five:

SB 512, MIB 75D, 76D, 78D
SB 512, MIB 75D, 76D, 78D
SB 512, MIB 75D, 76D, 78D
SB 512 var , MIB 75D, 76D, 78D var (obv legend)
SB 512, MIB 75D, 76D, 78D

They all appear the same to me except for one is listed as a "var," which I assume means variation, and some have an "A" or "B" below. If I am understanding the terminology, that means the letter below the large "M," correct? If that is the case them I am left with:

SB 512, MIB 75D, 76D, 78D
SB 512, MIB 75D, 76D, 78D

Which to mee look the same. So I guess that one is wrapped up.

I appreciate what everyone is doing by not giving me the answers, I was just struggling to understand what and where the diagnostic features are.

looks good to me! those are the 2 I got.

yes, yours definitely has the B below (that's means it's the second officina ....2nd workshop of the mint...A would be the 1s, and so on). as far as some of the differences between variants of the same type, I usually can't tell them apart...and don't even

Okay, maybe not a huge feat but I feel like:

I am really feeling the learning curve on these Ancient and Medieval coins. Everything looks so easy until you try to identify it. I suspect part of it comes from the hammering process and the fact that doesn't make the coins as uniform. My eyes haven't adapted to the tolerance levels needed yet.
