I am in the market for an 1889 CC Morgan. I assume there are fakes out there, does anybody have a relatively quick way/cheat sheet of how to find them?

Thanks in advance
Rest in Peace

Compare the coin you're looking at to all the known die varieties on Vamworld. Fakes are easy to spot when you do this.

Some fakes? this is probably the most counterfeited morgan... At least top three.. & They make some unbelievable fakes of this year.. So be careful. Look up the thread on this site with the unbelievable '89CC that was an amazing fake. Complete with die cracks, clashes etc..

In all honesty this is one instance where I'd say unless you really know what your doing buy slabbed or from a well known, reputable dealer!! At the very least post pics here for us to judge.. But the one I referenced above had many of us quite unsure..

Its no stranger that there are fakes out there....in these times. AS I HATE to relay on the top buisnesses who make there fortunes
BY "controlling" the perception of the known(numbers) coins in the upper levels of MS 65 MS66 and above therefore the controlling the values of the there known constituants investments.....However in these days and times, I would never think of buying a high valued coin unless I can account for credentials of one of the top three businesses who HAVE TO protect there prior..gradings values...this is why its so hard to get a nice coin up to the next grade, or one of grandpa's coins to be accepted into the tightly controlled higher grade levels unless its at least 1/2 higher than the minimum required to get the MS grade
ms 65 level must be at least 1/2 above the standard or it will be graded an MS64 .....if it meets the previuos MS65 levels, wonder why it came back an MS64. HMMMM

I have a few 1889 cc Morgan's that are the real thing. I just bought a 3rd one at the Rosemount ANA as well. One of the first thing to do is set your budget. The second thing to do is then cross check your budget with the corresponding grade. Knowing your seller is a big deal, if your looking at a Raw coin buy your coin from a trusted Vammer or ANA member. A Vammer will verify what VAM the coin is and for the most part if the person has been around a bit will tell you what the grade should be,

Still compare the photos with certified coin and make sure the sell understands the coin Ned to be "problem free" making the coin grade-able. Fair 4's and 6's in a slab run around 600.00 VG 20 coins start at around 1,200.00 . Not all VGA coins are the same as the one I bought today in a 20 grade should up grade to a 25 with no problem, Forum mom and Dad as well as a few other CCF members saw it and agree. Always buy the coin and if questions of grade come up post a photo and a few of us will chime in.

For the most part most if not all counterfeits from China are pretty good but are detectable. The coins may look fuzzy or dull lacking luster. Fakes usually lack detail also.I think there is one counterfeit 89 CC a VAM 7. It has small pockets of air or bubbles on it and it lacks detail also. We all know about the 96-o, 00-o and the 02-o micro " O's " that were minted outside the mint that fooled the top graders for years. Having all three in hand you can see the same attributes on all three which is impossible. Just recently at one of the major shows a fake slabbed CC dollar in a fake GSA holder was bought and detected by one of the graders at the show. It was good enough to have to be put side by side with a real GSA Dollar and holder. All in all fake Morgans are out there, they are usually the rarer dates some are the 93-s,94,95-s and the 89-cc. As stated above if your not sure buy it in a slab from one of the top graders or as Twohawks said buy it from a known dealer or ask for help to identify it.
