Hi, everyone. I recently purchased this large cent for what I feel was fair money. I was wondering what grade you would give it. Also, if any of you are big into the varieties of the large cents, maybe you can help me with that, too.

TIA

Is the date doubled? I really can't tell what's going on with this. The coin itself looks suspicious to me for some reason and I ain't sure why. Hopefully someone will come along with a better understanding of this design.

If everythin is legit and all I'd say AU50

In my opinion, this coin was struck from a die with a repunched date. The previous owner bought it in 1966, so it has sat in one collection for 40 years. I don't have any references devoted to the large cents, and the best references run $75-100...more than I want to pay, since I'm not planning an extensive large cent collection. There are over 24 known varieties of this date, so I would expect this coin is one of the known varieties.

Hunter, initially I was of the opinion that there was something very wrong with the date, compared to:

However, I have studied for about 30 min. now on 200% and believe you do have a repunched 1846 small date. The leading edge of the 8 where the two loops join in the middle really threw me. I now believe the hard edge instead of a smooth radius is a carry over from the earlier date. There are things that are not right, such as the wide middle on the 1 but again I think it is caused by the repunch. I am by no means an expert and the guns should arrive soon. I am curious now, too.
Great coin if that is what it is. Thx for sharing.
Jim
