Is there a reason for Blanked Out Serials on Slabs? Other than the fact that the seller maybe using a stock photo of one coin for several sales, are there other reasons that a seller should block out, or partially block out, the serial number?

Some people swipe the serials to build fake registry sets.

Maybe they are selling stolen coins and they don't want to id them to anyone that can see them.

I went to the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles show this weekend and was looking at a dealers coin when there was a commotion. A dealer was yelling, "Stop thief! Stop" Other dealers surrounded a guy about 35-40 who had stolen coins from this dealer. When they started looking at what the guy had, he had stolen about 4-5 coins (at least). They were trying to id some of the coins that were certified with serial numbers.
When they made the announcement that they had caught this guy and had been watching him since the Denver show, the whole hall rose up clapping. It was a great ending to the day!

I don't show full serials when selling camera equipment, etc. either. There are a lot of scams out there.

They can report it stolen and get insurance money. Then, you are in possession of "stolen property" when you sell it.

It's a good practice, really.

Another angle ... through the feedback forum on ebay you may be able to determine what the seller paid for the item if purchased within the last 90 days. You can assume by the description, but the serial number is confirmation. I've used the serial number on the slab numerous times to confirm what sellers paid for the item. Just another thought.
