Is this coin a contemporary counterfeit to fool shopkeeepers or a modern fake to fool collectors? How can we tell the difference? It was sold as a reproduction.

I'd say it's a modern fake. Most ones made here have "Copy" on it. Luckily this seller knows his stuff and is honest. I'm sure there are ones out there just like this on ebay that they sellers have no clue that it's fake. If I were to get it I personally wouldn't want a big R punched on the reverse.

Did you notice that "Liberty" is missing across the shield? Definitely a cheap modern casting.

If I had to guess, this seller probably bought this for themselves or as an investment to turn around and sell only to find out that it is a "China Special". Simply trying to get a few dollars back and is honest enough to say it is a fake. He has my respect.

Just noticed he had 2 other auctions that didn't sell as Repros

I'm glad now he's doing the right thing...and actually making money this time. Maybe someone from here explained his "cotton-headed ninny mugginsness" and he changed his auctions accordingly.

Yes- I had also bid on the 1840 SL Dollar, but it was removed and now re-listed. The coins may well be "China specials" that he is trying to recover; however, the coins make good study pieces. I recently saw a dealer in San Francisco offer bust dollar copy but plainly stated they were copies - "do not buy as originals." I am trying to build up a black cabinet collection, hoping I can one day be one-tenth as knowledgeable as swamperbob. But the question remains: What are the indicia of a modern counterfeit as opposed to a contempoorary counterfeit? Thanks.
BTW - Thanks to whomever added the "C" to Counterfeit in the title of this posting.

I just looked at those listings and the seller ended them himself to relist them as repros. Jim, I think your original feeling was correct - the seller deserves respect for doing the right thing.
