Yes!
I went to the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles show this weekend and was looking at a dealers coin when there was a commotion. A dealer was yelling, "Stop thief! Stop" Other dealers surrounded a guy about 35-40 who had stolen coins from this dealer. When they started looking at what the guy had, he had stolen about 4-5 coins (at least). They were trying to id some of the coins that were certified with serial numbers.
When they made the announcement that they had caught this guy and had been watching him since the Denver show, the whole hall rose up clapping. It was a great ending to the day!
I hope they nailed this guy with a felony!

That's some good news. I only hope he had some form of a weapon on him. Even a pocket knife makes it more serious. I have no idea what would constitute a felony for something like this, or if robbery in itself is one. I'm sure they can tack on a lot of stuff to the crime though. Definitely not the venue to get caught stealing coins....

They could stop most crimes if we could only go back to actually punishing the criminals. Too many lawyers and do gooders in this world to ever get back to doing things right again!

Terry, Or perhaps an economy were we all benefited and not just the super wealthy robber-barons and war profiteers. If we all did well, there would be less crime.

It has been my experience that criminals have a sense of entitlement, a lack of respect for others property, & a lack of "home training".

That is good news. This guy was more of a pickpocket type thief.
The robberies that are the scariest are when the dealers get followed home by somebody who ends up stealing their inventory when they stop at a gas station, hotel, or even in their own driveway. It sounds like the theives are putting some kind of "homing device" under the dealers cars, and are able to track them home, or back to the hotel, or wherever. We need full time security in the parking lots at some of the bigger shows, although small show dealers could be targeted by this type of thief too.

I suspect the value of the coins will have a bearing on the thief's sentence.

I can imagine His Lawyer saying that he only stole (say two dollars), the face value of the coins and his client had no idea of the coins true worth. Therefore, he is a petty thief, and should be left off with just a warning for stealing "a couple dollars".

The prosecution will say the coins were worth a great deal, and They will have to prove to the court that the thief had some knowledge of the coins true value , in order to make the serious charges stick.

The best thing the dealers could do, is to post this guy's mug shot behind every table. Just to make it difficult for him to steal again, since everyone will be watching him.
