A few months ago my Grandpa gave me his coin collection. I have gone through the collection and made a nice Excel spreadsheet, but I would love to get some extra information. Immediately I was drawn to the Morgan dollars. Unfortunately all I know is how to identify rare dates. I do not know the best way to go about getting help, but I figure I will just post pictures and hope to receive information and approximate grades. I tried to practice grading Morgans online, but that didn't work so well(My first guess was MS64; the coin was about a 50 ). Anyways I will start posting them and hopefully get some help. There are 33 of them so it may take awhile (They are all around 50-64). EDIT: Hopefully these pictures are better Edited by SHBcoins 08/21/2013 7:31 pm

Welcome to Coin Community, SHBcoins. Although accurate, your images are too small for any definitive opinion as regards grade; the best I could offer is that this one is no worse than high AU. It could well be Mint State; the luster seems sufficient. My gut tells me it is.
If you crop the images as closely to the coin as possible, the Image Optimizer will allow a larger image which still meets the size limitation. As an alternative, you could host larger images offsite and post them here with IMG tags.
I'm going to move this to our Grading forum, where you'll reach a more specific audience.

Ok thanks. I will work with cropping the images and repost them. Also If any of the coins look counterfeit or cleaned I would like to know.

That's the ticket. I have this one as very slightly circulated. No reason to doubt its' authenticity. As regards cleaning, this one displays (sort of) one of the "classic" signs - the blotchy toning around the devices - but my gut tells me that it's original-surfaces. I've seen this pattern a few times before with Morgans, and the luster is nicely undisturbed. Pro tip: to check for harsh cleaning (brushing), take the coin and a low-magnification loupe out into bright sunlight. You'll need to rotate and angle the coin around a bit - most times, you can't see a brushing except from one or two angles. Direct sunlight is hard on a coin, and will bring that out if anything will. However, digital photography is even harder on a coin, and will expose the hairlines of brushing even if your eyes won't. It's one of the reasons I'm optimistic about this one.

I agree that this is no worse than lightly circulated, and possibly MS. It is very difficult to determine from photos of a coin that is this "toned" and taken inside the 2 x 2. and to CCF!

It seems that quite a few of the Morgan's have that appearance. I did go to a coin shop and have a guy look at the Morgans and he said they were not cleaned. He wasn't too helpful and barely looked at them though. Here is another 1979 S with a similar look and a bit more luster.

I believe the second one is Mint State. If your lighting is identical for the two sets of images, the opinion is reinforced. One thing to consider with Morgan grading is that the dies were pushed to the limit - they were striking them as fast as they could - so die wear can create a similar look to very slight circulation wear. I've never really subscribed to the notion that so many Morgans were circulated for a month or two, and then saved intact for posterity, as the number of AU58 examples in TPG slabs might indicate. So the TPG's are copping out, covering themselves by referring to coins which are likely just late die state strikes as "Almost Uncirculated." The first coin has a look about the cheek, and the black above the eye, which I don't think could happen other than in circulation.

The first dollar I'd put at AU the second one looks full Mint State to me also, I'd say MS63/64 and quite nice, it has the Redfield appearence (a large hoard of Morgan and Peace dollars), the color or toning is very close to how many of them looked from the same hoard.

The next Morgan looks quite odd. There is some dark purple toning on the coin.
