I was looking into getting few GSA Morgans. It looks like there are hard case as well as soft case. Are there advantage of getting hard cases vs soft cases? Thanks.

Depends on what you want. I think the hard case are all the uncirculated ones and the soft pack are circulated. I don't know as I only have a few hard cases, but I do want to get a few soft packs as well.

GSA packaged the uncirculated Carson City dollars in the hard cases and circulated dollars from all mints in soft packs. There are far more hard cases than soft packs. Those who collect them pay some high prices for a soft pack while the price on the CC hard cases is relatively stable. Here's an interesting article on the history of the hard pack release. http://www.coinresource.com/articles/gsa.htm

So what would be reasonable premiums on common BU morgan and peace silver dollar in the gsa soft pack? Also, are there things to watch out for?

Are there any scarce date& mint marks in soft pack as hard gsa case? From what I've seen most common bu morgan is 1882,83,84CC costing around $180-200. Other dates are more scarce.

Quote: So what would be reasonable premiums on common BU morgan and peace silver dollar in the gsa soft pack? It would be HUGE! There weren't any BU coins in soft packs. Kidding aside, do a Google/Bing search for GSA soft pack census. Several have attempted to get a handle on what and how many. ebay auctions for these usually return about a 200-300% markup over the same coin not in a GSA soft pack.

Quote: It would be HUGE! There weren't any BU coins in soft packs. Actually there were. Toned Unc coins didn't qualify under the GSA grading as Unc so they were put in the soft packs, and for some reason a lot of the Unc 1878 CC dollars were put in soft packs as well.

As a whole, the dates and mintmarks are not scarce but it is quite uncommon to see any non-CC dollar in GSA packaging so those coins do have a premium that exceeds the value of a similar coin not in GSA packaging.

Thanks, Conder101. From looking through ebay GSA silver dollar soft packs, I noticed quite few that were in MS conditions (graded by NGC). It confused me that GSA soft packs had MS conditions when there was supposed to be circulated. So, it helps to ask here. I learn new things everyday. Will have to see if I could pick up any GSA soft packs at reasonable price.

Thanks, biokemist6.
I imagine BU/MS conditions would fetch huge premium over non GSA packaging. But would common dates with XF or less conditions justify 5X-10X premium over non GSA packaged silver dollars ?
