Hi Everyone: I recently purchased a raw common date but MS Buffalo. On the reverse by the Buffalo's hip is a small mark that I thought was a bit of toning. Instead, it seems to be an area where the substrate metal is exposed and rusted or corroded. See attached scans. My question- on averge how would this type of feature/flaw on the coin affect it's value or collectibility? Thanks in advance for any help :-)

shermae, to the CCF. To answer your question, IMHO it would decrease both. Where attractive toning increases the value, any sort of distracting marks or damage reduces the value.

It almost looks like it got hit with some sort of punch. Is there any mark on the correpsonding spot on the other side?

Thanks for the replies, helps a lot. Chetzler- actually no, and the spot is raised rather than inset. It's probably an area of delamination or a nick that became corroded.

Really?! It is raised, huh? I wonder if could also have been some kind of defect with the die. I can't speak much to how it would affect the value, but as far as collectibility goes, if that spot is not PMD, I'm always interested in oddities like this especially if they are artifacts of the minting process. I've started to accumulate a small collection of die breaks and wouldn't mind having a piece like this in my collection.

Definitely raised. I did gently put a q-tip to it with no results. Under 10X it's clear that it's raised kind of like a blackhead (sorry to be graphic!)with brown-orange colored metal in the center. I bought the coin on ebay and was trying to decide if I should return it.

If you post a picture of the front we can tell you the grade. I think from having that defect causes the grade to drop a lot.
I'm thinking AU-58 to MS-62

I have to post a new thread in order to be able to add a new picture of the front. I have it as an MS 60 based on the spot, however would love your opinions. Will post it in a moment.

Good catch on the ebay listing, solotime. It looks like that coin exhibits the same anaomaly as shermae's. Your post made me want to look for some other high-grade Buffalos online and it seems that many look like this. I think this is just a natural high spot of the design. shermae's coin just seems unusual because that high spot has been highlighted by whatever is going on with it (corrosion or wear?).
