I saw the above coin today graded 20 I think by PCGS. I can't find a comparable one anywhere for a price check. Any help?
Thanks

I think the PCGS online price guide starts @ 30 for gold. Might check various completed auctions. What people are paying is the true value.

Assuming it's a problem-free piece with decent eye appeal, you're looking at a $2000 coin retail. $1500 would be a wholesale guesstimate.

@BH1964 It looks great and am not really sure why it is a 20. I am going to take another look at it today. The guy wants a $1000.00

I went and looked at it again. The coin has great eye appeal and is def not trashed. The unfortunate thing is, it is graded by PCI.

Buy the coin, Not the holder. If it was MS64 and I put it in a holder that said VF, would you still buy it at XF prices? I sure would.

All bets are off with the coin in a PCI holder. $1,000 is a lot of money and might be a good deal and might be twice what it's worth. With good eye appeal and no obvious problems, $1,000 sounds fair.

IF it is in a genuine early PCI holder with the green border, there is an outside chance that it is accurately graded. Any later generation of PCI holder would be wishful thinking, especially the series with gold border. Be aware that bogus PCI holders with green border have been introduced in to the market in the past 5-7 years, so caution is paramount.

Thanks for the input. I don't think I will buy it after reading this thread.

Actually, early PCI was quite accurate. I would send it to PCGS for a cross if I were to buy it. $1000 seems pretty decent for this coin.

I'd buy it with a return guarantee and send it to ANACS. I like low mintage gold though. And I somewhat regret selling the only cc gold piece I had, so I'd be a sucker for it. I'd dump a common bullion gold coin to raise the funds if I had to.

I spent over a year looking for a CC Half Eagle and would have seriously considered $1000 for a VF 1879 with great eye appeal. I would have viewed it as a potential good deal. All assuming problem free. During that time, I saw pretty much every coin with great eye appeal go for a $100-$200 premium. Eye appeal seemed to trump grade under MS. I would take a third look. Oh yes, I ended up with an 1890. Wish I had an 1879.
