There were no Trade dollars struck in 1870. Definitely fake.
The first year of issue was 1873.

I've read online there were Trade dollars made as early as 1870 but they never become officially minted until 1873. is this the case or was that false information?

The only Trade dollars dated 1870 that I'm aware of were made in china recently.

Where'd you hear that information? That they were minted as early as 1870? Definitely false, the US mint didn't make the first Trade dollars until 1873 as Dave700x already mentioned. China makes alot of fakes with incorrect dates... You'd think they'd do some research.. But at least it makes it easier to spot them in an instant...

So yes, unfortunately 100% counterfeit..

If you don't mind me asking where did you get it?

Twenty U.S. silver dollar pattern issues (various designs/compositions) exist with 1870 date, typically referred to as Standard Silver Dollar. Either including an obverse design with Longacre's left facing Indian Princess version of Liberty seated on a globe, or Gobrecht's version of Liberty facing right and seated on a rock. The only U.S. Silver Dollars struck for release in to circulation in 1870 were the Liberty Seated design initiated in 1840. No Trade dollar Patterns made until 1872(J-1223), no circulation strike Trade dollars made until 1873.

Indeedy, to concur with others: this is a counterfeit. There is no chance it is real given the date.

It's worth about $1-3 to a counterfeit collector, or possibly (but unlikely) up to $5-10 as a one-off novelty.

My sincere apologies!

They did make "Commercial Dollar" (an alternate name for the Trade dollar) patterns in 1871. But not in 1870.

This coin has all the signs and "symptoms" of fake Draped Bust and Morgan counterfeits coming out of China. They all basically have the same condition/look to them. I have bought some of these, and I have been able to learn much from actually having them in my possession to study and compare. Because of this I was able to tell that this was a fake coin, even with the blurry photos and without knowing that these were never minted in 1870. The date will give it away to most, but the majority of fakes are of coins that were actually minted and highly valuable today. Thanks for posting this. It gave me a chance to practice my counterfeit-detecting ability. :-)

I'd like one of these, though (assuming it's not silver but base-metal), because I bought a Large Denominations USA type set folder recently and you shouldn't go putting valuable coins into those things.

So I'd stamp "COPY" on the side that won't be showing in the folder, then put it in and love it forever.
