I know the seller personally and am considering placing a bid myself, but I also feel his reserve is a tad high for the coin. Any thoughts on how much is a fair price for this coin and whether or not he's in the right grade range?

If you know him, why not make the deal outside of ebay?

You get a lower price, and he doesn't have to pay the ebay fees...

win-win I my book

He's looking to get as much as he can for it, truly wanting to get $400+ for it.

Even his reserve is higher than quite a few BIN prices I've seen on ebay (and not just for jewelry coins)

Of course he want as much as possible for it, but the reserve has to somwehat reasonable..
If it doesn't make the reserve, I would offer just as much off ebay. That way he won't lose about 12% of the $ ni fees.

I don't know if its just me, and it might be the pictures, but it looks as though it has been cleaned at some point.

It looks like a problem coin and probably worth half of his $400 desire.
