I inherited about forty beautiful, seemingly uncirculated 1909 VDB 1909 Lincoln pennies. I was wondering if it was better to sell individually or as a group and approx. value per coin.

I would probably sell them individually. But there is a chance you could sell to someone for $800 - $1000 for the lot.

well certainly check if any of them have an 'S' mintmark on them.

I don't see the lot getting as high as 800-1000, but maybe 600. You would eek out more than that individually, but there's a bit of a hassle there. You could throw the whole batch on ebay in one auction with 40 available pricing them at $19.99. It looks like an MS-62.

If some have "S" mint marks, then your talking even a better premium. Agreed, MS62.

Check for the S. Will make a big difference in sale price.

Wow, very nice! Definitely check and see if any are the "s" mint. I'd agree that selling them individually would provide the best return. And about $20 each sounds right to me as well. But selling on ebay the fees are going to be pretty steep...

Another option on selling would be to stick around here and get your post count up... Then sell them here.. I know I would love to upgrade my VDB to and would buy one for around $20 pretty quick... As I'd be willing to bet others would as well... They'd probably all sell out here pretty fast. So of your into coins and want to learn a thing or two definitely stick around, a great site and the posts go much faster than you'd think!

I say you sell them all at once, but only when you need money. Whether you allow you ebay to take its 10% for each individual penny sold or 10% of the whole lot, it is relatively the same. I know b/c I just sold 50 silver dimes the other day. Again, sell them when you need money, but only sell off the bad ones first (lowest grade), then move up to higher grades, which I recommend you put in, at least, Mylar cards.

If you don't need the money, go to a coin store or hobby store and purchase what is called flips. Put each one in a flip for protection. Also, you may just want to start collecting coins. Hoever, you could always ask at a coin store what they would pay for all of them. Not sure how old you are but if you do decide to sell to a coin store, make sure an adult goes with you.

Thank you everyone for your comments, ideas, and information. I would love to sell them to people in this forum as opposed to ebay. I have a lot more coins (other than these pennies) and I'd appreciate any help you guys could offer. Thanks again.

Welcome! One thing to consider is to sell them in lots of 5 or 10 and then some individually.

You will get the best price if you sell them individually.

IMO, take them to an ANACS booth at a coin show where they offer free grading appraisals. Set aside any that might make MS64 or better. Have those coins graded and sell each one individually. Sell the rest in a lot.

There is a big difference in price between a MS64 and an MS65. I would find a few of your best ones and post some pics of them so we can see what we are dealing with.
