When I first got this coin, I thought "wow, this is a really ugly Shield nickel, but it was only 20 cents".
Shield-Nickel---Strike-Through?-Planchet-Flaw?
Then I looked more closely in the chewed-up bit: I can see lumps where the other stars should be, spaced correctly. So some of the original coin detail still made it through whatever caused this defect - this got me thinking on whether it's just an ugly bit of PMD that didn't completely destroy the design underneath, or some kind of error (like a strike-through cloth?).

Anyway, I'd like to know what this is.

Looks like it could have been a planchet lamination defect, but the rim is fallen in, could be PMD just as easily with this much wear, hard to tell in this state of preservation.

It was a large delamination that subsequently received alot of wear. The PUPs are the visible metal grains(not possible with PMD) and the scant remains of some detail in the affected area(fairly common with large delaminations).

Here - the date is tantalizingly out-of-reach, so I'm kind of hoping that a lamination flaw is worth slabbing - just to see what the TPGs think the date is.
Shield-Nickel---Strike-Through?-Planchet-Flaw?
I thought it was in the 1870s, but now I'm not quite as sure. The last digit is most likely a 2 or 3... but I'll run around in circles forever on this.

Gotta be a flaw/lamination in the planchet. I see a lot of these worn to nothing. Bad design I guess. I had a SLQ that I couldn't figure the date until I posted it in classics after taking a pic with my USB scope. You could see the date after I posted it, faintly but there.

I don't think it would ever be worth the expense to slab a lamination/delamination. It is also worth noting that TPGs will not slab a coin with an indeterminate date, it would just get bodybagged.

The upper portion date is visible - and I don't have ideal lighting conditions. I bet I could find it with careful reference and a USB microscope.

Is there a price-range in this grade, though? My Krause North America catalogue only lists delamination flaws for V-nickels and onwards...
