Hi, all, I've been sort of wondering this question and Bababooey's post here

https://goccf.com/t/156309

got me thinking.

I came into the ATB series late. Actually my first one was last year when the Acadia ATB was released. I bought 2 from the mint because we had vacationed there just a few weeks prior.

Skip forward to 2013 and I really get into this hobby. Before, I had really just gotten a couple ASE's from the mint here and there as money allowed. Now I wanted to try and catch up on the 5 oz ATB series , so I put out some ads and ended up with a 2010-2011 set in NGC slabs along with the mint packaging. I had originally wanted the mint packinging only, but this was a pretty solid deal and I figured worst case I can always crack them out and put them back in the box, so it was a no lose situation.

Fast forward to just a couple weeks ago, I sent in my Acadia ATB along with the first 3 ATB's this year to NGC, just because I though I want to have everything the same - all in NGC holders. But after the pretty big expense in getting these slabbed, and then Bababooey's post, I'm kind wondering if its such a big deal to have some slabbed and some just in the mint packaging.

I guess this is probably personal opinion, but again, being new to this hobby, I'm kinda curious you guys' thoughts on this. The new ATB is released today - do I buy from the mint or maybe wait for them to get slabbed and pick one of those up?

Thanks!

I buy the P pucks from the mint and keep them in the OGP. I have no interest in having those graded.

The bullion ones are a different case for me. As I start to add some of these to my collection I will only look for graded (Proof Like) coins. The ungraded ones are usually pretty scratched up since they are shipped to the dealers 10 to a tube.

One way to avoid the expense of having raw coins slabbed...but them already slabbed.

Yeah, I might might try the already slabbed route on these next ones. When I looked a while ago, the BIN price on ebay was $239 for the 69, and this was about the exact cost after you pay $160 from the mint, plus $10 shipping, $13 cleaning fee, $20 certification, and then $24 return shipping.

But looking at some of the auction style listing (which I don't normally look at - I prefer BIN), those seem to go for a bit lower. So I may have to start bidding on some of these.

But more to the point, I guess, of my original question, would having a half raw, half slabbed set collection bother anyone? Maybe my OCD was coming out and I just thought that I needed to have everything the same.

The only one it will bother is you. You decide what you want your collection to entail. Worry not what others think.

I would not get a coin slabbed unless I buy it like it

I personally like the look of NGC slabs, but wouldn't bother getting those slabbed. I don't know.
The 5 oz just don't seem like coins worth getting/slabbing. IMO only. I would rather have real money in my collection, something that actually can/used to be spent for real. Again, do what you want, my opinion only.

For the 5 oz ATB pucks, I would actually prefer to have them in OGP. Regular sized coins look better slabbed. Actually, this I the one example where I think the PCGS slab looks better than the NGC. With a slab this size from NGC, all I see is WHITE.
