I work at a vet, and will say we have had quite a few animals "dumped" on us the past year, people bring them in get an estimate and then walk out leaving the animal behind. We've always taken care of the pets however, I don't get how people would do that either.

Our office visit price is $39.00 but the X-Rays (we'd have probably shot 2 of them) would run about $120.00, maybe $40.00 for a splint at most. And we only require half down up front of the estimate price, we'll work out the rest or help you get Care Credit or similar in house. Equipment isn't cheap our new x-ray machine is digital and ran around $110,000 this year. Most of our supply houses have gone to COD from a 90 day account due to many of the animal hospitals not paying their bills on time. Sad thing is when the economy is down like now the first hit hard seem to be pets, our vaccinations and yearly check ups are way down, many people are telling us they just can't afford it right now.

Hope the puppy is okay. I'd gladly give up any of my coins for the cats we have. Our cats are rescues all 11 of them. The vet should have just taken the debit card as a phone order and called it in - no need for the reader then, I do that all the time.

Then again...they probably needed your collection to pay for the card scanner repair.

Amazing story. Sad to hear. I would've fought them tooth and nail. (but what do I know, I've ever had to take a pet to the vet before.)
It wasn't your fault the machine was broken. What if you literally couldn't pay with cash?
I don't know, seems extremely rude if the vet to me.

You have rescues? Our cats just show up at our doorstep and expect to be fed. We've never had to look for them.

No offense, but if you are living pay check to pay check, you might want to collect less expensive currency, or coins!

That is ridiculous that the vet only took cash. Who does that? I don't carry cash on me, if their card reader didn't work then I wouldn't be able to pay.

I would have asked if they could set those bills aside as they were collectible..but they probably didn't care.

Puppy is doing well, he chewed most of the brace off after a week. Now hes running with the other dogs, with hardly a limp.

Yes these notes were from.a.time when.i could afford such things. But losing that job is what put me in the paycheck to paycheck bracket. Also why I have a roommate now, th I swore them off after college. Been a rough year. Darn economy.

Glad to hear that the puppy is doing okay.

I've had my share of bad years -- no fun at all.

All I can say is that my pets have always been a source of comfort.

Thanks all for your support. I've always said that the bad times are what make the good times good. With as bad as this year has been, I must have some great times ahead.
