So I get home from work yesterday and find out that my roommate stepped on my 4 mth old puppy. He hopping around on 3 legs and cant bear to have his 4 th leg touched. I take him to the vet. Two cracked bones in his ankle. Now to the sad part Before they would even look at him, they wanted payment up front for the visit. $80. Xrays and a makeshift brace. $90. Their card scanner wasnt working and they wouldnt release him until his billwas paid and would charge me more if he was kept overnight. The only cash I had was what was in my collection. I had no choice. The victims were a $100 1977, $50 1985, and a $20 star note. All AU/UNC from circulation. While I'm happy my pup was taken care of, I'm quite sad that I no longer have any big bills in my collection and it will take a long while before they can be replaced. I'm also upset about how the vet office handled it. I wish there was another vet in town.

Where was your room mate to "foot" the bill?

That sucks and doesn't sound very professional of the vet (though I do know they get stiffed a lot, at least around here), but way to step up to take care of your puppy

Glad to hear the pup is doing well. Sorry about your currency collection. It seems like since it was their card reader that was down, it wasn't really like you were trying to stiff them. In todays age lots of people don't have access to immediate cash because they carry a debit/credit card or paypal or whatever. Too bad you couldn't have left the pup there for a few minutes while you ran to the ATM or the bank or just took the dog with you to the ATM/bank real quick before seeing the vet. It can be tough when medical/vet places get stuck with deadbeat patients, but it seems like they would give you the benefit of the doubt in an urgent situation (unless there is some other factor or past issue).

Maybe you could let them know that they are collectable bills and that if they put them aside for you that you will return the next day or 2 with cash and take your collectable cash back home. At least that way they know they have the bill covered so they don't have to worry about you skipping out.

We, as per owners, have the responsibility to take the best care we can of our pets, and sometimes this requires personal and financial sacrifices. Your willingness to make those sacrifices is to be commended. Hope everything turns out OK for your puppy.

Consider finding a new vet that isn't so paranoid that customers would walk out on a bill. Then again...they probably needed your collection to pay for the card scanner repair.

Couldn't they have just held your notes until their scanner started working? I mean, it's not like it's such a huge sum of money they'd go out of business if they didn't deposit it right away. oh well I would have done the exact same thing. I hope the puppy heals quickly. Poor little thing.....

The roomie is gonna foot half the bill. He didnt have any cash either. It was the day before payday for both of us. Puppy will be fine. Hes running around with 3. Good legs. Its quite a sight actually. I askked him if he could hold them and he said he didnt really want to mess with that. Looked offended that I had asked. I explained it all and he really dint seem to care that much.

Sounds like a heartless jerk. Too bad you don't have more choice in your town. He chose the wrong profession.

Glad your puppy is okay. I would have been a wreck. Ask your vet if they have one of these.

ouch, I know that pain. a few months ago things came up and I had to spend a $100 bill id had for like 3 years from the 1960's and a $50 from the 1970's as well as like 3 $20 old style bills and 3 $10 old style tens(one of them a star note from the 60's). my big bills weren't as nice as yours and the 1960's star $10 had some ink stains but it still hurt to spend them.
