Today at my LCS, I purchased a 179X draped bust large cent. This coin has wonderful detail on the reverse, however has not been handled properly over the years. Is there any way I or any CCFers could determine the date? If so, here are pics:
I would like to add that I only paid $5 for it. If closeups of any areas are needed, please request them and I will try my best.
Would soaking this in olive oil help to reveal the date? I understand it may harm the coin, but with only $5 in it and the piece of mind I would get from knowing what year it is just might be worth it.
Feel free to call me crazy, but I think that last digit in the date is... drumroll please... a seven! S-140 has a late die state bulge that can eliminate that last digit. A corresponding bulge on the reverse will blur OF. Anybody with me?
S-140! That makes so much sense! I thought perhaps someone had tooled this to smooth out the area near the "7" and on the reverse. I agree with philadelphian 110%! There is also the separated right top of the T that looks like a pendant.
