Holy cow, that's cool. The die is trashed. Note the rim from about Noon to the middle of the area you detailed - I almost wonder if the die was a Retained Cud for that whole section. It's definitely disconnected for the area in your detail, and I'm inclined to think the "blank" area as completely gone from the die.

I think part of it is a retained broken die but I have not seen anything like the metal flow that seems to surround it. Nice find !

The die that struck this piece has almost 'had' it.
Retained piece broken die.

The Three Cent coins: The American equivalent of Maundy coinage.
Diminutive, scarce as a group, and very interesting.

Thanks for the responses. I had to have this one because I was amazed at the strike and grade considering the state of the die.

The only thing that disturbs me is that NOTHING is showing on the reverse.
BUT at the same time I can't account for the obverse EXCEPT for a failing die.

BTW that's a well struck reverse.
Generally there's significant weakness in the first "I" of "III".
