Got My First Shield! - Coin Community Forum

Dasaki Pillar of the Community United States 500 Posts	Posted 08/31/2013 1:37 pm So a friend wanted to give me a gift and asked if there were any coins I wanted, and I told him either a Shield nickel or Flying Eagle cent. When I got home from work yesterday, this was waiting for me on the table. 1868 shield, rev. of 68. It's a bit rough and has a bit of damage in the upper part of the shield, but has quite a bit of detail left in both the shield and stars. That green splotch on the reverse worries me though, considering trying acetone but I would like some second opinions on that. westcoin Pillar of the Community United States 9792 Posts	Posted 08/31/2013 5:32 pm Acetone won't hurt the coin at all, let it soak for two days or so, stir up the acetone a couple of times say every 12 hours, then replace it with clean acetone for another day, it looks like corossion and may not come off, but still a great gift from a friend that was thinking of you , maybe didnt know much about coins and condition - it's the thought that counts!
