Hello, I found your site after browsing around.

I am after some info on a coin I bought when I was serving in Basrah in 2004 with the British Forces.

I bought the coin off a local, mainly because it is big and looks nice. I am absolutely clueless when it comes to coins, but after browsing ebay and other sites, I just can't find any info on it at all. Its also very heavy.

At the time I got our interpreter to tell me what the Arabic on the coin said and he also informed me that it was a coin that was only given to Iraqi Military Officers.

Front - Unit, Freedom, Socialism.

Back - One Arab People . One Old Letter. 1968 July 30/17 Revolution.

I also got told that the pattern on the back is the old Arabian peninsular.

If anyone could shed any light on this coin, I would be grateful. I paid £10 Stirling for it. Am I sitting on a small fortune...?

Thank you.

You actuelly don't have a coin. Modern coins usually bear a denomination. It might be a medal, or token, because it is not listed in the Krause catolog.

The drawing on the reverse is the map of the arab world: northern Africa with the arab countries: Maroc, Algeria, Tunisia etc. and to the right, The Arab Peninsula. Good luck in finding the info you look for!

At 70mm across, that thing is huge!

There's no coin this big listed for Iraq in the catalogue.

1968 was the year the Ba'ath party took over in Iraq.

I just looked on ebay and if you search under "IRAQ Medal Stunning Saddam Portrait 1968 Revolution" you will find one list by an ebay store at $200.

Nice looking medal (for what it is) - I wonder if it was given as a reward or thrown at the recipient as a punishment (ouch!).

Thanks for the help, I found the same coin on ebay as you said, "IRAQ Medal Stunning Saddam Portrait 1968 Revolution". I was surprised to see the map on that one filled in green. $200, that's pretty good going (£100 in real money) not bad for £10 spent.

I don't think I would sell it, as it is a good keep-sake from that era in Iraq's history.

I am learning all the time; I had no idea that a coin is not a coin unless it has a denomination. Thanks for the advice on that one.

This will be nice to give to my children when they are a bit older.

Thanks all.

Harry.

Further to my last post, the guy who sold me the coin was just after the best price in US dollars, as that is still the only currency in Iraq that holds any true value at present.

The man wasn't daft; he knew that because it had Saddam pictured on it, it would hold some value. Just a shame in some respects he did not know it's true worth now, he could have sold it for a lot more.
