Hi folks,

I recently came across a $500 bill (series 1934) that I would like to have certified. It is in circulated condition and moderately worn. I'm sure it would grade low, but I just want to have an independent third party verify it's authenticity. I mainly collect coins exclusively, so this would be a one time use of such a service. Any advice on the best way to go about this without me having to buy a paid subscription to one of the grading services ? I'm more than willing to pay a reasonable fee for this single transaction.

Thanks in advance !

If you are only looking for authentication and not concerned about the grade then CGA would be the service to use. As far as I know it is the only service that does not require a subscription.

Thank you, I shall use this service. The fees are quite reasonable and they are very close to my home.

Have you checked PMG?

Yes, CGA is the only TPG without a membership fee, but if you ever decide to sell it, you would likely get less for the bill as the grade will probably be wrong. The "best" TPG would likely be PCGS or PMG as they are 1 and 1a in this field.

If you just want to know if it is real, posting a picture on here should be good enough for one of us to tell if it is real.

I agree with BisonMatt. Notes in CGA holders always go for less. I've actually seen notes in CGA holders do worse than what I think the notes could fetch being raw. If you are an ANA member you can get a code to use to submit to PMG (and thus don't need to pay for a membership.) I personally prefer PMG because I have had less issues from dealers when trying to sell PMG graded material. Many dealers have memberships to one or both of PMG or PCGS and could also help you submit your note without having to worry about the cost of a membership. If I were you I would go PMG or PCGS or just sell the note raw. You shouldn't have a problem with selling a $500 bill ungraded. If you find out that you can't get what you believe it is worth then you could go back and get it graded but only if you feel it is worth the cost of the grading itself. Getting a note economy graded from PMG only costs $5 more than getting it graded through CGA and the additional value it will bring on the back end is not even close. Go with a premier currency grader or don't bother at all, IMO.
