Quite a few off-metal errors are accompanied by additional errors. No mischief on the part of mint personnel is required. In this case, NGC probably got the diagnosis wrong. It's more likely that this is simply a uniface strike (struck beneath a quarter planchet).
Critical to the description of this error is that information should have included information on it's weight.
That has NOT been done. I am not, by innuendo, indicating that dishonesty is being attempted. My 'gut' feeling is that it weighs 2.5 grams, but they should have said so.
One would think that Anacs especially, would of weighed and measured this coin before attributing it. Kind of like the first step wouldn't you think ? As far as the weight no way to know now anyway. Unless the owner breaks it out. One I guess could get a pretty good idea of it's diameter by using another anacs holder of this type and measuring the width of the holder etc. then minus out the space taken up by the coin. Could a dime planchet be spread out this much ? If the planchet is actually a dime then would anacs diagnosis be correct ?
