So, this is the 1877 I bought a little while ago, that I mentioned in the other thread. It was raw. It was from a known ebay seller, that has 1000s of coin sales and a brick and mortar coin shop as well. I fretted over it for a while after I bought it looking up various things about how to judge authenticity. The odd thing is, that the obverse is quite more worn than the reverse. What do you all think? I'm a little bit afraid to ask... This was when I first stared practicing taking coin photos, so the picture are not the most ideal. Edited by Bababooey 09/02/2013 02:24 am

With an obverse that probably won't even grade AG I find it strange that the date is that prominent. If it were mine it would be headed for a TPG for authentication.

why does the legend look so far from the rim?

The N in the ONE on the reverse is supposed to be weak, but it appears to be damaged to make it look weak. But it could be just a coincidence.

I have the same questions everyone else has. For me the biggest question is why is the rim on the obverse worn to the point of being rounded and why is the rim on the reverse still square?
It could be because it was in some sort of holder/pendant that kept getting touched and played with, but then where are the indications from the holders?

That's what strikes me as odd too. Why is the obv FR-AG and the rev VG-F.

Once I got it out of the 2x2 I had my suspicions. Is is possible that someone wore down the obverse to smooth it out then altered the date? I check out the "1877" at the time and each digit appears to be in the correct font. Particularly the circles inside the eight. Not sure if it worth sending to a TPG, as the membership cost would be half the value of what I paid for the coin, and thus if It came back fake and I managed to get my money back, I would be out half of it at least. I suppose I could have several coins others evaluated at the time on the membership. However I really don't have anything else valuable enough to make it worth while grading.

Conder: yes, that is what was troubling me, it just did not seem like natural wear. Way would a coin only wear on the obverse in that pattern?

It does seem odd that the date is in pretty good shape while the rest of the lettering on the obverse is quite worn.

Can anyone tell me definitively that this is non-genuine? I have only a couple of days left to open a case with ebay. I checked the seller again, they have over 20,000 sales (all coin/ bill related). Their only negatives and neutrals in the past year were for shipping issues (too much postage, wrong coin sent) and there were about 10 of these out of 4000 sales for a 99.9% rating.

to me it looks like it was in a ring or something of that nature... I had a 1910 $2.50 indian head piece in a gothic ring setting and it had some of the same marks around the face edge... I'm just not sure who would put a coin like that in a metallic holder?...

I'm not sure you will get a definitive answer here, just a lot of people agreeing with your suspicion that something doesn't seem right. If you are really uncomfortable with this coin then go ahead and open a case on ebay. First check and see if he has a policy of accepting returns if you simply aren't satisfied. That would make it very easy. If not then bring up the issues that have been discussed here as evidence that it may be altered or counterfeit. Just realize that win or lose you are likely to be blocked by that seller, so you probably won't be able to buy from him in the future.

Saruma: thanks for the reply! Well if it is clearly not genuine, I would never, ever, ever buy for the seller again, I'm not sure how being blocked would affect me. I don't want to accuse anyone of selling a non-genuine product without just and clear reason. The time for returns has passed for that seller. And their policy is not removing from their case and sending it back if you are not happy. It's been removed from the case. So not being happy or suspicious is not a reason for a return at this point. If it is not a genuine 1877 IHC this is fraud, and quite serious. If the coin is real, I'm totally happy with the purchase regardless of the condition. If it is an altered coin from another date, or a coin made by someone other than the US government, then I'm not so happy.

You could try submitting it to ANACs which will give you the lowest price, probably about $40 to submit just one coin.

Did you weigh it? Also when did you buy it?
