I have been doing quite a bit of research on this thing for quite some time, but I just can't seem to find anything on it. Has anyone seen one of these before and what would be the general value on something like this? Also, would it be worthwhile trying to break the set up and getting them graded or should I leave it as is? I personally like it the way it is, but I'd like to hear some opinions.

I've never seen one. Buy it if it is reasonable.

If you're looking at selling the set online, I would absolutely get both the 1942/1 and 1916 d dime graded. I do not think anyone would touch a '16-D raw from ebay. Other than that, the rest of the set could remain raw and probably sold for around $1200 if the 1916 D and 1942/1 are genuine.

Must be a really old version of those. I personally like the horizontal one a lot better. Now I just need to find the value of the set, or find a similar completed one for comparison. Edit to add: 1916 Merc, not really looking to sell it as it's something I couldn't part with, but having them check out as genuine by a TPG would be nice. I'll try to get some pics of the '16-D and maybe folks here could help too.

Keep that the way it is. Looks fantastic. The 16D looks great too. The 16D, 21, 21D, 26S and 42/41 alone are worth a lot, real lot of money. What you might want to try is go to Numismedia for approximate prices. Myself, I love the way that set looks. You might want to eventually try upgrading many of those. Set could be worth well into the 20 thousand dollar range. Always check all 1945 plains for FSB's. If the middle ones are clear, could be in the 20K value.

Thanks, just carl. I was wary of breaking the set up and grading it. The only reason I would do that would be to see if the key dates are genuine. I do like the idea of upgrading some of the lower graded coins in this set as you mentioned, though.

I have actually seen one of those holders before. It's not a Capital Plastics holder, they never used the metal screws. It is a similar lucite holder. Here is my take on the set. It is a great set, but it might not be as valuable as you think. It sounds like you got it from somewhere and you didn't put anything together yourself. A few coins look cleaned. It actually looks like it is mostly low to mid grade (G-F) with a few higher grade and a couple BUs sprikled in. None of the better grade ones are also better dates. Honestly, if I pretend the 16-D and overdate aren't there, I see $300. The 16-D looks like a (possibly cleaned) G-VG, and those are not really performing that well on ebay. It might be a $500 coin if you're lucky, regardless of what your price guides tell you. The overdate is probably a fine or so, but it barely matters as it doesn't change value a whole lot in circulated. It's about $400. So I actually think you have about $1200 here. Less even if none of the dates like 24-D, 25-D, 26-S can break into F-12. Except for 16-D, 21, 21-D, 26-S, and 31-D, Mercs that are VG or less sell for spot or barely more. 31-D and 26-S aren't even much more either. I like the set, but I'm sensing from your "written tone" that you may think this is a better group than it really is and just don't want you to be disappointed down the road. Regardless, you have a 16-d and overdate so it's good anyway.

Wheatback, I'm a little bit confused. Did you just buy the set whole or did you put it together yourself? Saying that you could not find anything about it, suggest you don't know where it originally came from. At one point you said you could not part with the 1916-d, why the emotional attachment if you just acquired it?

My impression was that he was asking more about the plexiglass holder. Then I wondered why he would have purchased the holder if he knew nothing about it.
Regardless, that sure would make a nice display!

Whywing: yes, that too. Its hard to tell.
Anyways, do like the plexiglass holder, as well. And someone must have put in a lot of effort to put the set together etc...

Bababooey, this was my grandfathers and it is something I have inherited, thus the emotional attachment to it. Just trying to learn some more about what I have!
