I was doing some lurking on PCGS CoinFacts at the 1860 Pointed Bust Indian Head cent while mine is in Lay-A-Way and found out that there is a Die Variety FS-401 (FS-006.4) listed as well. I was comparing their images and I cannot distinguish the difference between them. I have searched for any characteristic references in determining the FS-401 variety but have come up with nothing.

(Updated) Here are some images for comparison.

PCGS has 350+ "regular" (2056) Pointed Bust cents listed.

Any-Difference-Between-1860-1c-Pointed-Bust-And-FS-401?

PCGS has nine (37393) FS-401 cents listed.

Any-Difference-Between-1860-1c-Pointed-Bust-And-FS-401?

The trend values are the same, so is the same type/variety coin with a moniker (identifier number) added?

Does anyone know the markers of the FS-401?

PCGS has not replied to these questions from a couple weeks ago.

NOTE: Neither of these are mine.

Thank you for your interest and comments.

The Cherrypicker's Guide lists the 1860 pointed bust as an FS-01-1860-401. Any FS number between 401-499 means that it is an obverse miscellaneous variety, which has to be a reference to the pointed bust. The guide also lists the PUP (pick up point-characteristic that make the variety unique)as the pointed bust. So I would have to conclude that the FS-401 refers to the pointed bust variety of the 1860 cent.

I know this does not answer your question as to why PCGS lists a regular pointed bust and a FS-401 pointed bust, but this was all I could come up with. I don't see any difference.

Thanks bb, I was thinking along similar lines; they are one of the same. Just another scheme for PCGS to collect another fee for adding a couple of charachters to a slab insert label.

Variety attriubution fee (FS-401) = $24

Bazinga.

FS-401 is Pointed Bust, all others are Rounded Bust. Substantial premium for FS-401; I guess PCGS wants a piece of that action.

I got a reply back from PCGS;

"The number 2056, Pointed Bust, would not be an additional fee. The label would read Pointed Bust (no FS number). The number 37393 would have the Pointed Bust FS-401 and charge the Variety attribution. It would be up to you whether or not you want the FS number on the label."

Same coin designation, as mentioned above, more money for the FS-401 designation, "$24 added to the level of service utilized."

BTW, PCGS does not recognize Snow-1 for the Pointed Bust, just FS-401. "...it does seem that the S-1 is the same as the FS-401. We will not attribute the S-1, on our label it would read FS-401."
