Hello!

I was wondering, can a a capsule damage a coin? I have this 1914 $10 gold coin and both sides, depending which is on the bottom, lightly hits against the capsule.

I'm worried if this might cause some sort of damage or wear.

I'm sure that you've heard of the term.."cabinet rub".

It's best to never let anything make contact with any high point on any coin. The rims are definitely in constant contact and that's as good as it gets for contact. ICCS holders as an example. Soft or hard plastic will impart some wear or change of surface luster on the highest contact points with time.

Handling the en-capsuled coins as less as possible is good also.

i always thought cabinet rub is due to the wooden cabinets used in the past!
do you think it's a good idea to get it slabbed then? I do enjoy handling my coins id like to do so risk free!

I think that the phrase is probably used 'too much' when trying to account for slight contact wear on our coins. If you play with your coins...then they are definitely going "down hill" with every "sortie"...

Don't handle your coins if at all possible..is my rule of thumb..

The more that you play with the slabs or plastic holders,...the more they(holders) get scratched.

Hard to truly appreciate the coin through scratched holders.

Any oils will affect your coin as does many environmental factors. Air, humidity, sweat,..droplets, breath, sneezing or fingerprints..etc.. are all bad for the coin...IMHO..

BTW.. Gold is super soft as a coin and it is very susceptible to marks and instant wear. Never play with your gold coins...they are very fragile.....

Thank you DEVLEC!

However I never handle a coin, especially if gold, with my hands. This coin is part of the BoC hoard and comes in the capsule. now I do not mind if the capsule get s a few scratches I just don't want the coin itself get damaged.
