This looks to me like India 10 rupees KM 60 with signature 85,except the serial begins M.

More importantly, the signature seems similar to
#85 R N Malhotra but isn't the same as the one reproduced by KM. Is this a known variety ?

You have a P#60k Signature Malhotra (as you said) but the variety is in the (larger) letter 'behind' the serial number. I beleive yours is the F.

I'm not sure why the Indian bank issues them with different 'background' letters but they still do it to this day.

Thanks.

I hadn't understood or noticed the large letter.

Are you saying that this is the correct signature and that KM is wrong ?

I've checked mine and other images and the signature on yours is correct.
Perhaps the picture editor at the catalog got it a) slighty wrong or b) it was 'lifted' from another denomination and is a very slight variation.

I check my list and yes it is a 60k. The letter in the back are known as insert letters and identifies the place where the banknote was printed. India prints its banknotes at Security Printing and Minting Corp. of India Ltd but they have different locations in different cities all over the country.

You can check out http://www.banknotes.ws A great resource for banknotes and the list of Indian banknotes is almost complete.

Country: India
Monetary Authority: Government of India
Series: ND (1962-1997) Asoka Column Second Issue
Cat Pick #: 60k 1964 10 Rupees
Letter: F
UNC $4.00 VF $1.50
