I read in the paper the other day that there is a coin and stamp show happening here in the nation's capital this upcoming weekend. I plan to attend and am a little excited as this will be my first such show. Is there anybody else here on the forum planning to attend?

... don't get too excited!
It is a small room with less than 20 dealers, half or more of them selling stamps. Highlight (and exception) is Sean Isaacs (of "Trends" fame). There are some good inventories to check but many dealers overprice and overgrade their stuff - be careful! Note that most dealers have a very small inventory and keep bringing it back over and over again - so, ask yourself before buying: "why this fantastic coin have not find a nice home yet?" Then, get your loupe and LOOK AT IT AGAIN! This is a very important advice to someone not used to coin shows. Another advice: bring cash, but be prepared to take cash back home - you don't have to spend it there.
This time, the "show" coincides with Brampton, much bigger. Probably there will be some absences.
I will be there chatting with Sean, checking a thing or another and spending some time with other collectors I know.

It is the monthly show at the RA Centre on Riverside. Generally a small venue, with a mix of material... If the weather is nice, I'll probably show up for a bit...

Ok. Thanks for the input. I was planning to go mostly just to look around and maybe meet a few other collectors. I wasn't planning on bringing much money. I might pick up a few cheap things (if there are any) that tickle my fancy.
@SPP: I didn't realize this show was a monthly thing. Good to know.

There's still a hobby for stamp collecting? (just kidding).
I'm in my fifties and a few years ago I attended a coin/stamp show and I decided to look over a few stamps.....the stamp dealer approached me and said "What are you looking for today, Sonny?"
Last time I was called 'sonny' was probably back in the early 70's.
I think the average age of the stamp dealers was probably about 75.
True story.

t y, There is much wisdom in your words: "ask yourself before buying: "why this fantastic coin have [sic] not find a nice home yet?" Then, get your loupe and LOOK AT IT AGAIN!"
Therein lies an important lesson. How to determine if a coin is on the market due to a recent liquidation. Conversely, why does the same coin show up month after month?
I do not have an easy answer, but the question is worth a bit of thought before spending one's money.
But oh boy, when coins surface after many years they are snapped up in an instant. Does not happen often, but I have snagged a few.

Will there be any bullion at all? I wouldn't mind grabbing a couple ounces of silver given they are not overpriced too much.

If Sean Isaacs is there, he'll have silver maple leafs...

Years ago I there were shows at the Château Laurier. Were they local collectors or dealers? And what happened? Why no dealer show in Ottawa?

Well, I went to the show this morning and enjoyed myself. It wasn't too big but that didn't bother me. I brought my son along and he seemed to have a good time. I was too shy to introduce myself to anybody though. Came home with a 1958 silver dollar ($18) and a 1985 nickel dollar ($1.50). Next month I'll bring some more money.

I was there in the morning... my motorcycle helmet was on Sean Isaacs' table...
I bought a 1976 PL set from Rod MacDonald for $4, with the nickel dollar being the double date type. Having not found any other cherries to pick, I grabbed a couple of silver maple leaf bullion coins, then enjoyed the rest of the day on the bike...

@SPP: Next time I am at the show you can recognize me as the one wearing an ACU (digital camoflage) patrol cap. Hard to miss. I plan to attend the October show.

SPP-Ottawa: Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I missed it. I went apple picking instead. Next month I plan to attend. Silver maples sound a great idea.

I also enjoyed this past show. Sean had a great table with all the silver. I also had some luck with Joe.
