Nope, no link. I have a chance to pick up a VF but we haven't agreed on a price yet, and I was wondering if they are worth all the money that the guide says.

It is a somewhat scarce piece. But not so scarce that a piece with problems doesn't severely effect the value. For example, the vast majority of collectors would settle for a cleaned/damaged 1921 5 cent piece at 400 known. But with a 20,000 mintage piece, they're much more plentiful. And thus much easier for a collector/dealer to want to pass on a problem one in favour of finding a better one.
On the other hand, it is scarce enough that it has been a target for being faked. So I'd make sure it's certified before buying.

Tough coin. There are more vg8 1921 5 cents available on any given day than 1890 halfs in vg to VF. Coin is under valued in my opinion.

7 listed on ebay now. 7 have sold on ebay in the last 3 months. Grossly overvalued in the lower grades.

It is not even close to the same league as the 1921 5 cents, let alone the 1921 50 cents! What are you guys smoking?

I quit smoking 3 days ago...... Most dealers carry a 1921 5 cents. They are easy to find. A no problem 1890 half is harder in my opinion.

Just looked up C&P's auctions over the last several years. I can see 22 unique 1890H 50 cents, and 29 unique 1921 5 cents. Based on that, I'd have to say they're in the same league, but the 1890H might be slightly harder to come by. The median grade of the 1890H half is VG10/F12, and the median grade of the Prince is VF30. Average sale prices (before 18% premium, and taxes): 1890h half: AG3: $600 G4: $750 G6: $900 VG8: $1200 VG10: $1800 F12: $2100 F15: $2900 VF20: $3850 VF30: $4800 VF35: $4900 EF40: $5000 1921 5 cent: VG8: $4150 VG10: $4400 F12: $5500 F15: $5500 VF20: $5250 VF25: $5250 VF30: $7000 EF40: $8800 EF45: $9750 AU53: $9750 AU55: $16500 MS62: $17000 MS63: $27500 MS64: $30000 I went strictly by the sale prices, no adjustments for whether the coins were graded by a TPG, or who the TPG was. Given that they are about equally scarce (per these numbers), I think it's kind of bizarre that you could acquire an EF40 1880H 50 cent (which is at least 2 full grades above average... and the highest grade that sold) for $5000, but it would cost $7000 to buy a VF30 1921 5 cent, which is the average grade for that year.

I quit smoking 12 days ago. Nothing's changed since day 11. Any coin that sells on ebay at a rate of about one biweekly is not scarce. They are grossly overvalued in low grades. Nice examples,F12 or better are tough, but don't waste money on the POS grades.

The 1890h that I was considering was ICCS VF20. He sold it to another party for 5K. More then I was willing to pay. Good for the seller though!

Tfred, with your money you should be shopping for an 1890H in nothing less than Mintstate. There are no I.C.C.S. examples available under MS-64, so you'll have to settle for a P.C.G.S. Glenn
