This coin walked into a local coin shop today. I might have a chance to buy it, it may have to be sent in NGC for grading. I would say it is, maybe VF grade. I think it is a letter edge, head of 1794. No stars on reverse. The only problem I see is on the reverse there seems to be light dirt around the letters/devices. All I had was my IPad, so the pictures are not that good. If any experts would like to comment, I would like to know if there is anything to check for. And what would be a good price range for a VF coin with dirt on reverse.

I'd offer $1000 to start, and stop at $1500. I'd get a return guarantee contingent on verification by ANACS. If it's real it's a very nice coin. The reverse dirt doesn't bother me.

Heck, I'd offer him $900 and see what happens. It a VF+ coin and if dug, not very corroded at all. Nice detail and eye appeal. I'd go no higher than $1300 personally.

I'd say at least high VF, but a little hard with the pics. Looks to be S-59, so an R-3 variety; don't know if that wound bring a premium here.

The coin was taken to the main store, so I went there. The owner already had the coin sent off to NGC, so did not get better pictures.
He thinks it might be XF, but agrees the dirt could hurt it. I guess I could see high VF to low XF. I don't know how strict NGC grades these coins.
Of course all this is still pending on if the owner, wanting to sell. I was working with the owner, and I think the price he will be offered will be in the range he will be happy with.
What are some of the opinions on the dirt on reverse, will it cause a details grade. Will NGC suggest getting it conserved? (I hope that is the right word)
I think I have about a week to get funds ready for a good offer.

A TPG will probably call it an XF. By EAC grading, it's in the VF range. The dirt will more than likely land it in a details holder.

Just looking at the pictures .. and they are not very good pretty blurry. In hand the date/details are nice.. maybe say bold. with a glass I could see a small hit on the reverse. Funny .. he also has a 1797 Half Cent, maybe G-6, that I did not look at very much. And he said he has a box of large cents at home that he will bring in. They were left to him by his mother .. who got them from her mother. What a day ... coins were coming in faster than I could look at. There was a couple hundred dollars face in Standing Lib quarters that I did not even get to look at before they were sold ... And I thought I was going to be buying Morgan dollars this week.

Yeah, it would. Let's say XF Details. Try to buy @ F money.
I think $1000 would be about right if I were selling this coin.

This is an amazing coin. I grade it EF40. It would be a steal at $1000 and I would be happy paying $1300 for it. I think its worth closer to $1800 or $2000

I have a feeling I will not be able to get this coin for less then $1300 ... But as soon as I saw this coin today, it really started calling me. There are a few things that have to happen .. Have to see what it will grade The owner will have to agree on a price I have to work out a price with the coin shop I just want to be ready, if everything falls into place

Aren't early copper grades really over-inflated? I thought TPGs were supposed to be absolute, but I've seen essentially uniface large cents that got AG-3 (or worse, G-4). I guess it's nice that EAC takes the requirements more seriously...? (Or do people want to own "uncirculated" coins from hundreds of years ago, so the whole standards are inflated to meet this urge?)

Not sure what your point is? Or what that statement has to do with this coin

I just thought it was interesting that there was a huge gap between NGC and EAC standards...
