I got these two recently and need some pointers to the grade and value. My Krause is little old and I have been mainly relying on the NGC world coin price guide.

1696 William II crown - 28.67g

This one is the most worn coin I have and I think is about VG and no more than F for sure. Now the NGC shows the price for VG8 at $135. If thats the case I have done well. Again not sure what will this fetch in UK where I believe these grades are not that hard to come by ?

1889 Double florin - 22.5g

This one seems to be XF or UNC. The most interesting thing is the 2nd I in Victoria, which seems to be inverted 1. I did not know this at the time I buy and found out later during the research on NGC. Now I am almost positive the second I seems to be a inverted 1 and dont see any altering as far as I can see. If it is genuine with inverted 1 it seems to be considerably more valuable.

What do you think ?

I'll stick my neck out and suggest £30-£40 for the William III crown, which I think is VG.

I find it strange that KM values these coins so highly because normally KM undervalues British coins.

I've often wished I could buy British coins at KM values - unfortunately US dealers rarely use KM for pricing British coins !

The double-florin certainly looks like the rare inverted 1 instead of second I in VICTORIA. I wonder if it's underweight; 22.5g seems a bit low. It's difficult to tell from the pics, but the surface is too marked for Unc, EF at best. Also, I would expect some detail on the medal, but there's none.

Thanks Pertinax. NGC says the weight spec is 22.6206g, so the weigh is close. Good catch on the medal, did you meant to say you have doubt this could be genuine or just that the grade cant be better than EF because the medals details are lost ? Anyway I got couple of close ups on medal and the inverted 1.

I would expect to see medal details on an EF coin.

For price... as with any reasonably available coin (as both of these are), ebay completed items should provide suitable (sensible) pricing info.

22.62g prescribed down to approx. 22.5 g on that double florin is indeed perfectly acceptable for a piece with some wear, which that double florin has. On that topic... by wear, I don't think the piece even makes what the British call EF (XF). It probably also doesn't make American "AU details".

Aside from the surface marks, the problem with the double florin is that it has been thoroughly, harshly cleaned. Do you not recognize that? If not... you should.

BTW, DYK that there's a subforum on here specifically for British material?:

The William is only a filler.Less than UK fair. These still get £30+ on ebay.
The double florin has been cleaned and dipped. The underlying grade max NVF as it is battered.
Although inverted 1 the treatment has reduced the value from approx £45 to £15.

Ok I picked up another double florin as I like the design very much. About the same price as the other one but I really like this ones tone although there is a small rim nick. I was foolish to not notice that the first double florin was dipped.
