Ok the subject for this round is assassination. So the Emperor/Empress, King/Queen or ruler must have been assassinated. Perhaps a slightly morbid subject but I thought as it was such a frequent occurrence in ancient times it should allow for a lot of entries.

As per the last smackdowns the rules are as follows:

1) A maximum of two (2) coins per Member.
2) Coins after 1453 AD are not allowed.
3) Voting: vote for 3 coins in order of preference, Gold (3pts), Silver (2pts), Bronze (1pt).
4) Host announces the winner. Winner chooses next Smackdown Subject and is host.
5) You do not have to enter a coin to vote but please do try to enter something.
6) Base your votes on any criteria you like, eye appeal, rarity, quality, anything you like.
7) Final decision if two coins have the same score and the same number of golds and will be the host's choice.
8) Enjoy.

Entries begin immediately!

Voting will begin on Monday 16th September!

Probus was assassinated by his own troops after they had defected to the usurper Carus. The coin below will be awarded to whoever wins gold.

Good luck all.

Wow, a tangible prize! That's mighty generous, Jimbo!

Hmm, I'd better read the history of my few potential candidate coins.

I am glad you both like the prize. After collecting ancients for about a decade now I have always been left slightly bemused and frustrated by the lack of interest and enthusiasm from my friends and family. Coming across this site was like a breath of fresh air and so it was an easy decision to give something back.

Nice entries pishpash, I particularly like the reverse with Sol Invictus in his chariot.

Nothing gold-worthy, but I'll at least bump up the thread:

Valentinian III (reigned 425-455 AD) AE4 nummus
(note: a rather rare emperor, my coin is in slightly better condition than other tiny bronzes of this era)
He was overall a very ineffective ruler that did more harm than good for the Western Roman Empire during its slow collapse in the 5th century AD. Personally executed his right-hand man and the main person keeping the empire together, magister militum Flavius Aetius. Two of Aetius's Hunnic soldiers then murdered Valentinian in the Campus Martius in Rome in 455 AD.
