Finally found a credit union in my area with a coin counter and guess what? They will not sell me bags, I can't catch a break.

Didya ask for boxes, as well? A counter is a good thing to have, especially free.

Most of them won't. I asked at about 12 locations and I have 2 that do. The others get punished" and become dump banks

I guess I don't get why they would not sell you the bags. Why does it matter who gets the bags, you or a bank.

One good reason may be that the bags are not accurate on the total count of their contents. A while back at my credit union one day the manager noticed me buying rolls and offered me a bag of quarters so I took the big bag. It was from a brand new state of the art coin counter. Found not a one silver but the kicker was that the bag was short over $27.00 I had hand counted and rolled all the quarters and noticed it. I was lucky as the CU reimbursed me. An incident like that would give them good reason not to sell to even a member never mind a non member again.

Exactly. The count may not( and I can speak from experience IS NOT) accurate. One of the banks with a counter used to sell bags of halves until some idiot complained they were shorted 2$. They were finding silver and worrying about 2$. They stopped. Stupidity.

I poured $50 in brand new 2103 dimes into a counter the other day and the total it gave me was 47.03. I can understand if a few get counted as pennies.. that's bound to happen once in a while.. but where did my $2.70 go? :( Of course there was nothing they could do.
If I am using a machine that I haven't used before I will have a "test" dump. I put like 10 rolls worth into a bag and count them first and if the total is correct (or at least close) I will continue with my main dump. If I had dumped my $500 bag in to that machine first and it was off by that same margin, I would be shorted nearly $30.

They will not sell bags off the machine because of whiny roll hunters that come back crying because the bag is short...they are tired of dealing wit it...it's just that simple.

It's happened to me quite often over the years, and I dump $500 to $1k in dimes at a crack. Yes, sometimes dimes get counted as cents. My receipt shows this. My CU will later count the dimes in the cent bag, and credit my account. I normally never count before I dump though, just by the roll.

Another reason is cost. One of my sources are charged 4.00/box for ordered coin. US bank now passes this onto the customer, & sticks you for returning them. The mngrs. of check cashing joints are very good people to know. Once they know you'll pick up what you ordered (they have little space), they'll bend over backward to make you happy, providing you throw some biz their way. They can do the same w/notes, & they're always CU.
