Thought I would list MY pros and cons for each denomination that I have hunted. I am mostly in it for the silver and people CRH for varied reasons, but this list works for me.

HALVES By far my favorite.
Pros: Good silver return. Even 1 40% is a decent return.
Chance for a big score! (See my "mother lode" post)
Easy to rim search.
Easy to put together Kennedy sets.

Cons: Hard to get! To get any quantity you have to order them and a lot of banks won't order them.
Ties up a lot of capital: $500 minimum and for me usually $1,000 bags.
Hard to dump.

DIMES:
Pros: Easy to get. I can often walk into a bank a get a box with no advance notice.
Decent silver return. I get about 1 a box. Most posters here get about 1.5
Easy to rim search.
Capital tie up moderate: $250 a box.
Easy to dump.

Cons: Not much variety in the way of errors, and other "keepers".
(Not many cons which is why I like dimes.)

NICKELS:
Pros: Easy to get.
Low capital requirements. $100
Lots of keepers. You find more coins before 1960 in nickels than any other. (whether those are "keepers" is up to you.)
Easy to dump.

Cons: LOW silver content,1 per box if lucky and they aren't worth much being only 35%.
Not many in the way of any good value. SLOW to search. you have to look at the date on each one.

QUARTERS:
Pros: Easy to get. Easy to dump.
Easy to rim search.

Cons: High capital requirements. $500 for a box.
VERY LOW silver content. 1 per 5 boxes for me.
Not many other "keepers" (if any).
Why bother with quarters when the other denominations
are much better.

PENNIES:
Pros: Easy to get.
Easy to dump.
Low capital requirements. $25 for a box.
Lots of keepers! Who doesn't love a Wheat penny?
COPPER! all 1981 and before and a lot of 1982 are copper. These can be sold at a (very) slight premium. And you can horde these if you wish.
FUN! For some reason pennies are just more fun.

Cons: Value of "keepers" very low. I have even found a 1909 VDB and it's still worth <$10. Your average Wheat penny is about .03
Storage of large amounts of copper is a pain.
Time consuming. You have to look at each one.

That's my list and I am biased toward silver. Feel free to post your own pros and cons.

Also I know some people search dollars, but I have been unable to get any in significant quantities so I didn't list them.

I dont know about anyone else, but the coin counter machine I use to dump my coins at sometimes counts dimes as pennies. I havent noticed this with any other denominations.
Thats a big con.
When it is $.20 or $.30 per box that you lose then its not worth worrying about, but when it gets to $2 or $3, it eats up any gain you have made on silver finds.

That's a good "con" on dimes baysinger626. I quit dumping dimes at one of my dump banks for that very reason. Had 37 dimes count as pennies once. I know... because I didn't have any pennies in that group. That's a loss of $3.33

Yeah, some machines are terrible.
From one branch I frequently find dimes, quarters and nickels in my penny bags, and LOTS of pennies and some dimes in the nickel bags. It usually evens out though if I get $100 in pennies and $100 in nickels. So, if that bank ever turns into a dump bank, I wont take them anything but pennies. I doubt it will though.. they are really awesome. Last weekend I got $200 in pennies, ($100 in bags and $100 in boxes) $100 in nickels and $500 in dimes.
I keep the gears lubricated there with cupcakes and sweets now and then. :)

to sum it up dimes are the best bet - except the time I brought back 1000 dollars in dimes and they were counting as pennies what a mess that was

How do you resolve it when the machine screws you? The other day I brought mixed change to a bank with a coin counting machine and I realized afterward that it said 54.00 in halves but I knew I put in 55.50 because that was how many I had obtained from another bank, searched, and upon finding no silver, dumped. But at that point how do you prove it?

Also, Monk I just LOL'd at my desk when I read your post about the 1k in dimes counting as pennies.

Ouch M0nks. I look forward to the day the coinstar machine messes up and counts my penny dump as dimes.

My only suggestion to the list would be a con on the cents. It always seems to me that it is pretty tough to move the vast majority of varieties you can find unless you price them down quite a bit.

That is crazy M0nks! I guess they had to open the machine and count everything in it to check and see how much it was off. You also have to wonder how much that happens to regular people who don't even notice because they have so much random change.

You don't have to look at every penny's date if you turn them face down to search. Then just pull out the wheat pennies.

In order!

- A loose tub of Voyageur Dollars: Don't I wish.
- Quarters: Commemoratives and varieties to search through. I've found the most (i.e. any) silver from quarters. There's also the elusive 1970 and 1991s to look for! And they're large and easy to read for faster searching. Plus you can try for State and ATB Quarters! [Con: You'll get British 10p mixed up in rolls.]
- Nickels: As long as it's not a sealed BoC box, you're guaranteed nickel nickels, giving you at least 2 cents of profit. You can also find 12-siders and nickels with a King George! What's more, you can make money by finding British 20p.
- Dimes: Theoretically you can find silver dimes, but I've had no luck, and even with perfect vision, staring at them gives me a headache.
- Loonies: You can look for the elusive 2012 old-style loonie, commemoratives, conditional rarities (almost all 80s loonies are very worn by now!), and when people break up mint sets, they spend the loonies and toonies first.
- Pennies: Copper was issued until 1996, and I find King George VI pennies fairly often! But good luck getting your hands on some.
- Halves: Get a roll of halves and you will find no silver at all. Loose halves are better, but they fly out of banks because people are convinced they are all valuable. I ask for them so I can spend them, but I'm never lucky enough to actually get them...
- Toonies: Maybe you can find varieties, but there's not much appeal, and actually keeping them gets expensive. Plus, fakes exist.

CrazyCoinGuy's list covers it for the most part. I have one big "pro" to add to searching half dollars: No boxes of brand new 201Xd. It is extremely frustrating to get a box of all brand new coins, especially when you put in an order for 4 boxes of dimes. You have to decide whether to go ahead and buy them or potentially burn a bridge by telling them you don't want new coins.

I've never had any luck with dimes. Searched two boxes back in '09 with no luck whatsoever.

Quarters are the same story, but I was at least able to stockpile some nice territory and ATB Quarters.

Halves- found 3 90%, 9 40%, and 10 NIFC in my first box. Box 2 had 2 40%. Hit a 5-box streak of skunks and gave up.

Pennies: Just never had any luck. I'd usually average 5-10 wheats per box, usualy 1940-58. All of my best finds were from circulation, not CRH.

Nickels: I think these are the best denomination. I'd average 1.5 War Nickels and 1 buffalo per box for about 20 straight boxes when I got a sealed Brinks box fro my local bank. I rarely searched customer rolls, but one customer box had an entire dumped collection of 4 rolls of 1938-1960 and one full roll of buffalos.

Dollar coins: A joke, imo. I tried an entire box once, and got two NIFC Sacs. The rest were '79 SBA dollars, '00 Sacs, and "07/08 presidents.
