Local guy brought a $10 coin to me today.. 1913 gold that the mint had just re-released awhile back. It was in the clamshell and had the COA but I told the seller I would have to sit on it for a couple days before I make a decision to buy.

It looks good.. but with it not being .999 I can't do a specific gravity test to prove it to be authentic...

The seller is asking $950.. (needs it for books) and I think that's a fair price... but then realized that the coins are selling on the bay for 1k ... or more..

So just putting it out there to those who are a lot more knowledgeable than myself... because if a deal sounds too good to be true.. it usually is...

Any thoughts or things I should look for when I bring my loupe and cash?

Not an expert on these at all, but if they're fetching $1000 on ebay, after fees, he might clear $900. I wouldn't be terribly worried because of that alone

You can certainly do a specific gravity test on it. Just use the number for the alloy instead of the .999. What's the karat?

S.G. .999 = 19.3
S.G. .900 = 17.2

I just looked up the specs

It's 90% gold... 10% copper

with a mass of 16.72 grams

So would I use your S.G. .900 = 17.2 as my multiple in my calculation or a different figure?
