I just signed up for this site, and know very little about US coins. I have collected coins since I was a kid, but do not do it, as a seriously collector. Right now I am helping a friend with a small coin collection. and need some advise. So far we have taken the coffe can and separated out the silver (pre-64) and wheat backs. My question is most of this is all modern and looks to be about (guess about $300) should we just take it to the Bank?

You can keep the copper pennies, also check for errors. Welcome to the forum!

Don't take it to the bank. Research your coins, take time to go through all of them. You may have a gem or two.

Especially if you have been saving them for a long time. Lots of older errors and varieties.

Thanks all! I have someone the is very impatient. she has cashed that in now! The Lincoln Penny's post 59 Roosevelt dimes and Washington quarters, were sent to the bank. Total was $319.00. well at least all the dollar and half dollar coins are still here. The best value coins are still here, so I will be working on getting the rest. and will be asking a lot of questions. I have looked at the site a bit and some of my questions I should be able to answer by just reading. There are some proof sets and other various coins that are still in the collector plastic and mint bags. I am a coin collector but it is not my hobby. I do moderate another type of collector forum site, so I will take what you all say with a great deal of respect. Thank you again in advance! Chase.

Dimes were silver all the way until 1964. So if you turned them in your impatience cost you silver coins. Also half dollars all the way until 1970. There are also pennies that are worth over a hundred dollars of many different years. Many errors and varieties worth a decent amount. Happy Hunting! and

One of the biggest problems these days impatient people. Most Americans spend 15-25% more on fuel. Another is "it's not my fault." Lots of very helpful people here if you can provide good pictures. Although not physically active, coin collecting can occupy time with or without spending money. Most collectible coins do not become more valuable as the American dollar devaluates. If you can have fun with coins and not have to make money, it is enjoyable

Welcome, I'm the type that would tell her she cashed in a 'thousand dollar coin' before I found out about the 'error'. Make her regret her greed. Bwauhahahaha!

I think it is great that you are helping a friend. It is true, knowing what we know, that she probably had some error and variety gems in that $319 and it is a shame, for her, that she didn't take a little time to examine them, but who knows, maybe she had no choice... However, on the bright side, they are now out there for us to find and trust me, we'll all be looking!
