Have any of you detected in extremely high trash areas like an old dump from the 1940s? There has got to be good stuff in there that people accidently threw out. Also has anyone ever detected a high water wash area. In the south we call it a "holler". It is basically a low spot between two hills that is really low in between. Water washes a lot threw there, just wondering if you guys think this would be a good place.

I'm a starter in metal detecting, here in Brazil. I'm what is figuring out with my Ace 250. Searching for my backyard, I've found a 1946, 10 centavos and a 1970, %0 centavos. Not bad but the place is so full of trash. I've found so many nails. I will post some pictures of my findings.

I swing a higher-end detector, if I were to hit a dump, detector would only null out over the large iron content. Virtually a waste of time. One would have better luck with a large sifter for the soil.

You can find nice items on such an area but to do so you need to take a jump back in time. The detectors that are most in use today would block huge volumes of the ground due to the 'crap'. Yet an earlier detector with a really fast recovery time you could set to find items within the trash. All in all, you could do well on such a site but it would be such a ball ache that you would do better hitting a local park or old beach area.

Yeah, I will probably try what fistfullofdirt said, and try a sifter.

Really? Your going to go through a dump with a sifter?
I admire your courage.

You never know. I normally dig for bottles in it, but I figured I would try looking for coins too.

Victorian bottle dump digging is one of my old passions. I remember my first ginger beer as if it was yesterday, *cough, even though it was a LOT longer! Let us know how you get on with the sifter, maybe you will turn up some smaller interesting stuff we miss when digging the ash.
