I would like some opinions on this coin. I am concerned that NGC is grossly overgrading these coins based on market interest. Here is the coin in my possession. I will not reveal the grade here yet, but if you are curious, you can look at our coins for sale as it is running now. In my opinion, this coin barely makes MS63 (and I really think that may be stretching it.) The marks that you see are on the coin, not the holder. I am very concerned as the amount of overgrading I am seeing on this rivals some of the alphabet companies in my opinion. I am curious as to what you all think.

It kinda depends on the specifics of the series, I guess - you can generalize about grade to a degree between issues, but early copper simply does not grade the same way as a Barber Half.
There's no way I'd go over MS63 for this coin, and even that is a stretch. The marks are just too prominently located.

I'm assuming that these coins are graded on the same principle as a "weak strike". They have to go thru 2 steps of machine processing now which gives every single coin just a little more wear. It is possible they are grading accordingly but also I think the market does have some effect on it as well.

So, judging by the way I remember coppercoins grades things, we'd be looking at best MS60. This is just the MAIN FOCAL POINT. I didn't even feel like wasting my time with the reverse. I guess I could just circle the whole coin..... I must say though, I have not been satisfied with any coins I've been getting out of rolls due to dings, but if this is a 63, I have a ton of 68's lying around.

I won't get this coin, a lot of damage for it(age wise), compared to how many MS65+ examples there are out there.

NGC graded this coin as MS64. I have looked around ebay and have looked at other MS64-MS66 coins and they are ALL overgraded. In my opinion, NGC is not trustworthy on the grades for these coins. This is an example of why collectors need to buy the coin and not the slab. In this case, the slab is meaningless.

Well I agree, but they technically are buying the coin and the grade is a bonus since NGC supposedly measures and weighs them before slabbing. It would be really foolhardy to buy one without some verification that Joe Blow didn't grind on them with a band-saw! LOL

Bio, did you remove the butterfly bandage that was on his eyebrow before you sent it in, or did they do it? I think I still see some blood coming from that gash.

Ol' George's horse wasn't behaving so he head-butted it Other than the forehead, the obv is clean. This was one of yechi7's coins that I purchased.

If this is MS64 then I own some MS67 Washingtons! I haven't seen one grade higher than MS66 by PCGS.

Your MS64 looks a lot better than mine. NGC must be out of their minds! I haven't seen one graded below a 64 by NGC (though I have seen plenty that should have been in the 60-62 range). I'm very disappointed. While the grade is only a bonus, I think they either need to just authenticate or grade them properly.

with Susan for sure. I think her older grading standards are starting to rub off, and I believe this to be a good thing. I certainly hope nobody took offense to my "joking". While the hits are pretty big, the rest of the obverse really does look good. I would say without just one of those hits it would be a solid 64 IMO. With all of them right there, and not seeing the reverse, I am truly skeptical about ever sending a coin into NGC. That is unless I want to flip it for fast cash!!!

Wow! MS64!!! In a pigs eye! NGC must have Blind Melon Chitlin' working for them now. "Gonna go downtown" thump! thump! "Gonna grade some coins" thump! thump! "Gonna put 'em in a slab" thump! thump! "Gonna show 'em my ____ ____!" thump! thump!

Interesting thread Susanlynn9. I just bought 3 rolls of Adam's looking for an error coin. I believe I was the first owner of them. While I didn't find any errors, I did cull the 2 best coins in there for my collection. I didn't realize people were getting these modern coins graded, maybe I'll send in one of these now that I know. Thanks!
