When it comes to graded coins, is there really much difference between a PR69 and a PR70 besides cost? Also where can one find prices for such coins? Don't see prices in the Red Book for them.

There is a difference, but the naked eye usually cant see it. ebay completed listings are my favorite place to check price history, but numismedia is also a good source

Your best resource for coins like this is Heritage Auctions' archives (ha.com). You have to register, but it's free and you don't have to list a credit card or anything. You'll find their images (since 2008 or so) to be huge, and they will be a revelation as to what the true differences between 69 and 70 are.
Which is to say, on any given day any coin might have either grade. I've seen many, many 70's with obvious dings and marks, and discount the grade completely these days.

A 70 is not worth the price premium. Buy the 69 and be happy knowing that you have more money at the end of the day. Of course, this is just my opinion. You can find a lot more of them here... https://goccf.com/t/149674

May depemd on the TPGS too. What some may say is a 70, others may say 69 or 68 or who knows. Lesser known TPGS's may just put a 70 on a coin for publicity or lack of knowledge.

I agree with jbuck. Personally, I wouldn't pay the "70" premium that is asked for PF-70 and MS-70 modern coins.
The difference between a PR69 and PR70 (or MS69 and MS70) is generally VERY minor and difficult to see. Also, as SsuperDdave pointed out, the two grades are often not applied as consistently as one would hope.
Just my thoughts...

'Gradeflation' is suspect?

I have dozens of 69s and not one 70. The quality difference is not worth the price difference IMHO. But there are those out there that just have to have the best. If two identical coins are graded 69 and 70 then some will purchase the 70 because it has been graded so by a reputable TPG, even though the 69 is identical. Rick

I won't pay a premium for a 70. Although nobody would crack out a 70 and resubmit it, IF for some reason you did there's a very good chance it wouldn't come back as a 70 again.. I've got a couple 70's (ASE's) thy I got in a trade and I can't tell the difference between them and my 69's under 200x mag with my USB scope... Some of the 69's actually look nicer IMO. And one of the 70's doesn't deserve the grade at all. I don't believe in such a thing as a "perfect" coin, or a perfect anything for that matter. Theres room for improvement in absolutely everything, nothings absolutely 100% flawless/perfect. Perfect is something that lets us strive for something better..

I received a proof 70 from a company and returned it because it had a scratch on it. They exchanged it but also told me that if the coin goes straight from the mint (shipping box unopened) to the TPG there is some allowance for defects and the coin will still get a 70. That shows why some 69's look better. Right now the major players send in a lot of sets. This is inflating the number of actual 70's by including coins that would not grade 70 if sent in at a later date.

I dont really believe that. Theres no reason too they send in enough coins that theyll get what they need. If that were the case the SF 2 coin sets would have done a lot better than they did

Quote: I dont really believe that I'm just glad they took it back and gave me a "70". It did open my eyes about the 69 vs 70 debate. I just wish I had taken a picture of it before I sent it back.

Yea I mean things happen, theyll get milk spots or who ever holdered it could have damaged it by accident. You definitely should check the coin first if possible. But for special treatment its against the TPGs interest to do it because it was mint sealed. Theyll either just hurt their reputation and/or have to pay out if its sent back in. The special treatment seems to be more expedited turn around times and reduced fees, basically the same special treatment they get from the mint.

I would never pay a premium for a difference that's not discernible to my eye, especially not the kind of premium you often see on PR70 coins. I buy coins because I like to look at them, not because of the number on a piece of plastic.
