Get this. I just talked to the U.S. Mint more on the Kennedy half's rumored demise after 2014, and the woman I talked to said "As far as I know, there are no plans for discontinuing the Kennedy half after the 50th anniversary issue, but there are also no plans to strike any new designs for general circulation. Maybe just a two coin set" Then I told her how people here were saying that Mint officials were mentioning at coin shows, that the 2014 half will be the half's last year of production, and she said "Well, if you want, you could hold, and I could check with my boss about it" so I said "Sure, no problem" and less than a minute later, she comes back and says "Sir?" and I said "Yeah?" and she said "I have been told no plans to end the production of the Kennedy half after 2014, and no known plans for Liberty coinage as of yet" and I said "Well, maybe the U.S. Mint should still put out educational materials for banks on the Kennedy half, so maybe people may ask about them and maybe request and use them again" and she said "Well, I can always suggest that"

Then I asked her "I'm not sure if you know much about it, but how are things going as far as the "$1 bill Vs. Dollar Coin" issue goes?" and she said "Well, actually, they are talking about discontinuing the dollar coin" and I said "Wow, I thought toy were going to say that they were talking about discontinuing the $1 bill" and then I said "That would be after the Presidential series ends, right?" and she said "Yeah, some time around then"

Then I talked to her about the redesign of the $2 bill with the Meaningful Access redesign, but that it was starting in 2020, and that is so far away, and she said "Well, maybe they'll ramp it up" and I said "Yeah, I hope so"

But I can't beleve it. You would think it would be more practical to phase out the half, than the dollar coin, but the lady said "Dollar coins just are not getting used as much as they expected them to" But halves aren't used much either. But it looks like the dollar coin is about to pull anothe "Susan B. Agony" where they stop making them for many years, then start up with a new series a few decades for now. I don't mind the dollar coin going away, as long as the $2 bill and the half are safe, since we already have $1 bills that work just fine. I just hope we could see some redesigned $1 bills in rge future, as long as we are going to keep the $1 bill.

Still, this is strange, because, isn't the dollar coin used more than the half? However, they did continue to mint halves after the SBA fiasco.

You should have also mentioned to her that the dollar coins aren't working because the feds won't discontinue the dollar bill. Would have been interesting to hear their response. But thanks for the info!

Scratch this message. I just checked back, and there are also no plans to discontinue the dollar coin as well. I just said to this other lady "I guess there are a lot of rumors going around. But there WILL be 2014 Kennedy half bags and rolls with the traditional designs, and the dollar coin will contimue to be minted.

Sorry. Lots of conflicting stories.

Yeah, I had to check back, just to make sure they were still making bags and rolls of halves in 2014 and beyond, and I mentioned the broscure idea for banks in 2014 and this other person agreed that it would be a good idea.

I just wish I knew if vending machines truely do have the ability to accept the half, since I never heard back from jbuck's vendor friend.

Hey Fox just curious, who do you talk to at the mint? Do you know someone there or so you just call up customer service?

I just call up customer service. I get someone different each time. I guess that explains their conflicting stories. I'm beginning to doubt if I tell the truth on some issues to you guys. Sorry about that.

Remember that the Mint has very little control over coin designs or denomination choices. While they did actually have some control in the past, most coin decisions are made by Congress and they direct the Mint to do their bidding. The Mint also has limited control on mintage amounts for some coins.

Congress has mandated designs on the cent, 5-cent, quarter and dollar coins for circulation and the Mint could really only change the dime and half without authorization from Congress. If they tried anything other than a limited-time design on the half Congress would be sure to intervene and either retain the current designs or mandate something else.

You do know that talking to random customer service representatives is a pretty poor way to find out anything that's going on in mint planning, and also that second-hand accounts of mint officials at coin shows is also a shoddy source of information, and also that the mint wouldn't be where you go for information about the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Right?

Correct. I was just mentioning my thoughts on the $2 bill to the Mint employees while mentioning my thoughts on the half. I was not expecting them to give me any useful information on the $2 bill, however, the man I talked to (all others were women) said he was full aware of the upcoming $2 bill redesign in the Meaningful Access currency redesign starting in the early in the 2020s, which was kind of a shocker to me. I guess maybe some Mint workers look into currency issues, just as some BEP workers probably look into Mint issues.

Remember that their customer service is like any customer service anywhere. Most are people hired to answer a phone and usually have no idea what is going on in the entire world. Sort of like customer service for HP or AOL. Famous for being outsourced to India and people that can barely speak English. For all we know when you call the Mints Customer service you are sent to an anwering place in India, China or the South Pole. As a rule customer services are intended to make you feel good, not give you real anwswers.
Stop the Dollar Coin? Why? I suspect the government keeps making them just to make them. Same with the Cent.
Now picture how many people would be out of work if they stopped making anything at the Mint. AND those could be voters you know.
