I recently purchased this 1870 Bust Half Dollar from a reputable online auction company and received it in the mail today. They guarantee that all US coins they sell are 100% authentic. However besides being holed, I have concerns such as, the coin doesn't appear to have ANY visible denticles on the obverse or reverse, all 13 stars are attached to the rim and the edge lettering is suspect to say the least! Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated as I only have minimal knowledge of this coin type and a small window of time to contact the company and return the coin for a full refund! THANKS!

I forgot to mention that it weighs 13.3 g which I think is about right and that it is non-magnetic.

First off to CCF.

It looks authentic in my opinion. Capped Bust Halves vary considerably due to the minting processes of the time. Many have weak/uneven strikes and the dies used to strike them were used for a long time before being replaced, thus die cracks and latter die states.

The stars being attached to the rim is characteristic of overused hence worn dies.
And the missing dentils are from the same cause.

IMHO, it's genuine. Here's a similar specimen on ebay:

IMO, you're good to go!

Here's my 1830 (O-122/R1) that has the exact same lack of denticles and the same stars extended well into the rim.

The phenomenon seen on these stars, called radial flow lines, is common on big, old silver from the US Mint, and often quite striking. Here a good write-up on it:

Looks good to me just a different strike; coins from this time period had faulty strikes most of the time. Cool piece!

Thanks everybody!! I recently started a 7070 and was able to snag this coin BELOW melt for a hole filler! That's why I had a few concerns. Coin in hand, it seemed authentic but the lack of denticles put that sense of doubt in my head. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
