Okay, let me begin by stating that I am extremely new to coin error terminology, etc. I found this dime today while I was rolling my dimes. My wife's Raiders are playing right now and I have nothing better to do!

The first thing I noticed is the coin is struck slightly out of collar. Then I began to look at the letters and the date and something just seemed off to me. It all seems thicker than a regular coin.

(I was using the coin on the right for reference)

1985D

On to the reverse:

All of the letters look funky to me. The "ME" in "DIME" appears odd. "us Unum" appears to be odd as well, not to mention the thick letters in "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".

So....am I completely off, or is there something going on here?

Thanks for looking!

Well I don't see anything odd, but I did just wake up from a nice sunday nap so....
The first thing that came to mind was maybe a Dryer Coin?

So you're saying the letters have been worn away or flattened from bouncing around in a Maytag?
Rest in Peace

The 1985 does have a few issues but nothing truly remarkable -- as far as I know.

It is the result of a misaligned die (MAD) which is why the obverse is a bit off-center but the reverse is okay.

I think it also endured an uneven and weak strike.

Then, once it was released into the wild, it got used a whole bunch....

So, yes, it is off, but within tolerance I think.

I keep those -- I keep hoping to get a decade or two off MAD dimes. When I have completed the set it will be worth one or two dollars depending upon how many decades I can complete.

that this is a misaligned die (MAD) strike ... and what you are seeing is the result as well of honest circulation wear.

Sorry I should have been more clear. A Dryer Coin is a coin that gets stuck in the drum of a dryer. I am having a hard time putting this into words so you can easly draw a mental picture, so I hope no one minds me hijacking this from a google search. When I first saw it I thought the edge looked like one but I guess not

Anyways here are how they happen now that we are on the subject..

And here is an actual Dryer Coin, notice the thick raised rim.

Correct it is a slight MAD coin. Spendable. An almost device over the edge, but not close enough.
