I looked up the 1979-D RPM on Coppercoins.com and I am a little confused. I have a coin here that looks like the one that's on CC's site:

I think it is because of the bar under the apparent "D".

It looks like a D/D to me. See that little "V" in the bottom left of the "D" or D's? That's what I am looking to clarify.

The one ABOVE one appears to be a rotated version of the ones I have.

This is one that is perplexing..

Its that bottom left corner of the "D"....Well in this picture its the bottom right, since it is turned. I don't know if it is from a deteriorated die, or if this is indicative of another issue.

Thanks for the quick response... = )

Do you see any of the other markers on it? I think it might be a 002

The 1979-D coins suffered with a damaged punch. You can find this on many denominations and dies until they replaced the mint mark punch.

Ok, so I have a Hummm maybe 40 or so of the rotated D/D's and about 1,000 of the damaged punch ones. I'm one-fifth or so through the 5,000 count bag !

I think it is 003 vice 2.......

That hairline crack by the designers initials is one indicator. The backs of many of these coins are weak stikes or, the die is severely worn, so its hard to distinguish other indicators. If I find any I will try to add to the post.

This 5,000 count bag is definately funky. There is a decent amount of the D/D's, and a LOT of the damamged punch ones as well.

The D/D's, especially the rotated ones are associated with an obverse that is simply falling apart.
The die is either so clogged or worn that the designer initials are about gone. One of the top pics shows the designer initials and the way the reverse looks on alot of the D/D's.

On some coins, It looks like they attempted to clean out the reverse die, paying attention to just the designer initial side. Several of the coins have this oversized rectangle imprint centered on the designers initials that sink deeper into the coin than the rest of the strike.
The rest of the reverse is still horrible, exemplifying a combo of weak stike and clogged letters with a splash of Machine Doubling.

Then, on some of the coins, I see a brand spanking new reverse, BUT the Mintmark punch is still damaged.

Its an interesting bag, well worth the investment and I'll have fun trying to finish this thing sometime this month.

All my 1979D's look like this, so I'd say it was a rpm. Nice find
